848 Looking For A New Toy

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by jay26, Dec 31, 2015.

  1. Hi all

I’m in the market for a new bike; I’ve got a max budget of 7k and would really like a 1098 or 848 evo.

My first option would be a 1098 but my question is, am I better to go for a early higher mileage
1098 or the slightly later lower mileage 848? I’m asking because iv heard the early 1098 had a few issues but iv not really heard much of the 848.

I know im going to have to test ride both but i get the feeling that i will much prefer the performance of the 1098

    thanks

  2. It is really all about personal preference. Your budget would buy a nice 848 Evo although sadly probably not an Evo SE which is worth the extra. For probably 75% of the time the 848 will be fantastic but if you feel the need for the extra HP you could be disappointed. Personally I don't so wouldn't be. Lot of support for the 848 and also a lot of support for the 1098. Let the test ride be your guide. Andy

  3. Personally I would go 848 Evo, slightly lighter, has all the little tweaks and fixes missing from the 1098 and it still has more than enough power

  4. You can't go far wrong with a nice 848.

  5. I have a 2010 848 non EVO. I have never needed all of the power that it has let alone more! I suppose that I might if I was racing, but on the road?

  6. i see there is a nice 848 evo in the for sale section nice young lady by the name of clare scott selling it.

  11. Thanks for all of your replies but for 8k I could probably get a 1098s, was there any common problems with the 1098s, what should I be looking out for when viewing one?

  12. Some of the earlier ones from 2007 suffered from bearing failure.

  13. If they suffered from bearing failure what sort of mileage would this show at?

Also I’ve been looking into the 848 vs 848 evo, everything I find on it says that there is very little power difference between them, I know you get better brakes on the evo but is it really worth the extra £1500 to £2k?

  14. And there is a low mileage (3000) one on Ebay for £7K at the moment

  15. Bearing failure can happen on any of the 1098/848 bikes regardless of mileage. I remember panicking when I got my 848 Evo in 2013 because a guy had a 2012 one that had dropped the mains, but tbh... It's a bit like the rockers thing from the old days! So much stuff can contribute to a premature component failure.

Put it this way... With the Daytona I had it was gudgeon pins failing and the Pistons going awol... Every bike has its reported issues

  16. If in doubt buy a 1198

  17. Buy a 848 and fit monoblocks

  18. Buy an 1198 and spend nothing other than track days
