Luddite Question About Brembo Levers

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by richgilb, Jan 1, 2016.

  1. Can anyone tell me what the 14, 15, 16 17 19RCS means on the Brembo Radial cylinder and levers?

Looking to replace my standard ones on both sides but am a bit lost.

    Cheers.

  2. Piston diameter and stroke. Andy

  3. Right so I need help then. I really wanted less flappy levers as mine are a bit tired now and maybe a lighter feel through the cylinder doing more of the work. I see you can spank about a grand each side. Which ones should I get? I have the standard Brembos that came with my 2002 900 SS IE

  4. I guess this is for the 900 ? I have no experience with that model but the master cylinder ratio is determined with the caliper which means playing with the ratio on its own may not give you what you are looking for. I think I paid between £250 and £300 each for my brake and clutch master cylinders so a grand each seems excessive. There has been some sound advice on m/c ratios on the forum recently so hopefully someone with specific knowledge will answer in due course. Andy

  5. I have an 1100 Evo engine with Avanti clutch master cylinder in a 2002 900 SS IE.

Carpimoto suggests 17RCS or 19RCS for the brake and 16RCS or 17RCS for the clutch.

    Hoping for more opinions here....

  6. What front calipers do you have ? Andy

  7. I don't know actually.

  8. If you want a Brembo m/c then for a non Brembo OE front brake caliper use a 19mm/20 ratio m/c and for a Brembo OE caliper use 19mm/18 ratio m/c. A 16mm/18 ratio m/c is pretty universal for a clutch. Bike Torque Racing do the Brembo front brake m/c for about £200 with a basic lever but if I remember correctly, they no longer stock a Brembo clutch m/c. Hope this helps, Andy

  9. Sorry I thought you asked what size and I don't know. They are Brembo calipers

  10. Okay, then the Brembo advice is 19/18 front brake m/c. Andy

  11. Cheers do you know about the clutch?

  12. Topically Motoblouz.co.uk (discussed earlier today) are offering both Brembo brake and clutch master cylinders at just under £250 each (free postage) with a fancy folding lever. I have the folding lever on my clutch but I prefer the longer basic lever for the front brake - just for the very subjective thing called "feel" and no other reason. Andy

  13. completely agree. the short ones are not right for me

  14. I'd get the radial RCS ones, 16mm clutch 19mm brake and you can vary the ratio/feel to suit :upyeah:

  15. Do you have a link ? Andy

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  16. Why 16mm clutch and 19mm brake?

  17. 16mm is the standard MC bore for the clutch slave, 19mm is pretty much (there are exceptions) the standard MC bore for a twin disc front end.

I'll see if I can explain it if it isn't obvious, the bore diameter dictates how much fluid is displaced as it moves (bigger bore=more fluid) the position of the lever (ratio) changes how far the piston moves in relation to how far the lever moves. So it's all a balance to get it to "feel" right.

You might think that putting a bigger bore on the clutch one would move more fluid with relation to lever movement thereby making the clutch "easier" but it's more likely to be like a switch "all or nothing"

In a similar fashion I believe the new brembos on the big Pani need a 16mm brake MC as the "standard" 19mm one will give you no feel at all.

  18. Thanks that does make sense. So if I already have 16 on my clutch and 19 on my brakes I am getting an improved piston and also getting the benefit of adjustability? Or will the piston be the same quality as what is coming off?

And if I wanted a more progressive feeling brake I could get the 17?

  19. Their web page states that the 17RS is for brake calipers with a piston diameter of less than 32mm. Before committing, you need to measure the caliper pistons you have bearing in mind that the 4 piston calipers often combine two different piston diameters. My 748R has calipers with 34mm and 32mm pistons. Andy
