1199 Battery

  1. hi guys
my Pani failed to start this morning. was quite frosty overnight and i am just hoping it is as simple as battery gone flat.
it is actually first time in 3 years i decided to take fairing off and quite surprised with the following:
it is surprisingly annoyingly tricky compare to 999/1098/996
half of the rubber washers are missing from under the screws on both sides (bike been serviced 3 times by a main dealer - do they just randomly decide when to put one back on when not? annoying considering how much we have to pay for service?)
could not work out immediately how to get to actual battery (how to take that black cover off) , anyone can advise?
was in the massive rush, so decided to take train to work and sort out bike tomorrow when i have whole morning free.

  2. The black cover is held in on 2 rubber grommets and a small lip arrangement on the bottom. Gently pull the top edge out and it'll all become clear. Under that. there's a plastic retaining strip held in a screw.
Be mindful of the power latch on the bike. If the key has been turned on, wait at least 90 seconds after turning it off before disconnecting the battery.

  3. thanks a lot!
i take it i can charge the battery on the bike without actually disconnecting it? or is it not a good idea?

  4. thanks. got to the battery today. had it on charge for 2 hours. showing fully charged on the charger display. bike is still not starting . well,it almost does but dies . do you think it is battery totally gone or could it be something else? bike is almost 3 years old. battery is original and bike used daily in all weather??? any opinions?

  5. is this a correct yuasa battery for 1199s? YT7B-BS

  6. Nop it's yt12b-bs... With that doesn t have amps needed for starting

  7. Are you sure? It is YT7 according to yuasa site and eBay battery sellers?

  8. Thanks! Do you guys think from description it is a battery? Or could it be something more serious?
Yuasa is the one to go for, right?

  9. Does sound like the battery. It may have 12v but not enough juice to fire the bike up. YT7 is correct. Li-on are coming on and price is getting easier, but for me not quite there yet. I'd put another Yuasa in there.

  10. thanks a lot, nelly. ordering battery now and will have to train it to work for another couple of days. not super.

  11. When u get the battery don't be tempted to smash a fast charge on there. Personally I would go with a trickle charge for 24hours and then she should be spot on!

And yeah, definitely a yt7! The 848 Evo had a yt12 but one of the advantages of the panigale having a decompressor is they could use a smaller battery

  12. My battery recently died too. It was the original and I guess must have been just over 3 years old and kept on a trickle charger. I do keep it on a trickle charger, but it looks like I hadn't connected it properly and it wasn't charging for a week or so. Long enough for my weak battery to die. It was totally flat when I tried starting the bike, but did fire back to life after an hour or so on the (properly connected) trickle charger. Enough to get it to Moto Louigi where it was booked in for a service that day, luckily. They stuck a Yuasa on there and no problems since. It turned out that my trickle charger wasn't connected properly and not providing enough charge, therefore the battery, already quite old, just died.

Hope yours is all ok after you get a new battery on there.

  13. Sorry my mistake, you're correct! I had a battery once that had 12.5v but didn't had the needed amps for the start... It could be that!

  14. Id have a look at thr Motobatt brand of battery. Had one on the 1098s, good ampage and etc and its a better battery than the overpriced Yuasa imo.

  15. When I was looking, I found people either loved or hated Motobatt with quite a few early failures.
Yuasa have the reputation for being just solidly dependable and the price is very similar. Got mine from a local branch of a battery chain for just over fifty quid.
I haven't bothered trickle charging it this Winter because it holds its charge so well.
I stuck it on charge for the first time in six weeks or so and the full charge light came on within a minute or so.
Combined with one of @Exige 's cable kits, the motor starts up instantly no matter how long it's been since it was last started. Brilliant!

  16. Hear ya...but i still reckon my 1098s was far better at rurning over when left a week or two with the Motobatt...but like you can, there can be a dud battery here and there.

  17. Maybe it's the cable kit making the difference.
Technology moves on though, I noticed the Yuasa actually had a better spec, in terms of CCA etc, printed on the box than was listed on web-sites.
The previous battery was a Bosch and unless I kept it topped up on a charger, it was hopeless. A lot of that will be down to age of course though.

  18. Could you please describe these noises? First time you've mentioned this I think...

  19. no clicking or whirring then. That's good. Does the battery struggle to turn the engine over or does it crank enthusiastically?
