apparantly there are two relays near the battery box on the 1098 but buggered if i can find them.....help,where are they?
Bringing this thread back from the dead after 3 years :Wideyed: While putting the 1098R back together today, I noticed the headlight wasn't working. The side lights were and the lights would flash with the trigger. So I pull the thing apart (again ) thinking it might be the headlight relay. I switched the relay with one from behind the battery box and the headlights work, so that's sorted and I'll take a trip to the dealer tomorrow to buy a couple. Question is, what are the relays behind the battery box for? When I had removed the relay and substituted it for the headlight relay, I still heard the fuel pump prime, but this could be one of the other relays. My guesses are - Indicators, fuel pump, fuel injection. Does anybody know?
Have you got a picture of the location of the mythical relays behind the battery? I am thinking that while my bike is in bits, I may as well locate them and replace them. Cheers, R
So..they are not "behind" the battery box per se, but are located to the right of the box when looking at it...which is "behind" the box when considering the direction of travel? So, I understand that they are located in the gap between the box and the generator cover? I will take a look. Thanks.
Yes, RHS when you are looking at it. there are 3 there and the other is behind the dash for the headlight. There is an updated part number now for the original relays. I bought 4 from my dealer today and replaced them all just while I had the bike apart. £4 each. One has failed so better safe than sorry. I'll carry a spare from now on under the seat.
From the 1098R workshop manual. Headlight relay........ (2) 3 x relays behind the battery box...Injection relay(s) blue (52), fan relay green
Here is a schematic from the 1098S and 1098R parts manual. The R does indeed have an extra relay in there. 1098S 1098R
Just a note, if you are going to replace them (either relay sockets or relay themselves) do not pay over the odds. All of them shown (I counted 2 next to each other and another close by) are standard 5pin 12V relays, commonly used in automotive industry. Good brands are TYCO or BOSCH (due to having well plated contact areas inside for durability and current). Socket costs about £2.50 and relay about £3-4 online. Can be bought on RS components or farnell UK with free shipping. Would not personally source from ebay/amazon as most of them are likely overpriced crappy relays from shenzhen (china). I personally replaced all relays with waterproof socket & relay combination on my 749.
sorry, I should have been clear, they are indeed 4 pin relays but can be substituted by 5 pin relay as the only difference between 4 pin relay and 5 pin relay in this format is that 5 pin relay got extra NC pin inbetween that does not play any role. The socket is for 5pin relay anyway as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/ezSuX.jpg 5 pin relays are more common and easily obtainable. You can use 5 pin relay as replacement.
Well I paid £4 from the dealer for the superceeded part. Hardly a bank breaker to replace the 4 on my bike.
