Another nice to have winter project for the 916 trackbike could be to change the 'boat anchor' 3 spoke wheels to something lighter. Pretty expensive though, is it worth it and will I feel the difference in the steering/braking/whatever? (and where to buy at reasonable prices) tnx again Jim
Nothing really in reasonable priced aftermarket wheels, just more and more expensive but you would notice the difference
I asked that same question, as I doubted it too. Ask Arthurbikemad on here....he has carbon BST's on his 848. One day I'll be able to justify 2.5k for a set, I now know they're worth it, but there's lots of other things in my life shouting for my money first....but I'll have some one day.
A great addition to a bike. Keep a look out for second hand ones in the normal places. £800 would get you a nice set of mag dymags, machesini's or marvics. I notice the steering is a bit more direct, more flickable and suspension plusher. Plus, buy secondhand and look after them ypou can always sell them on with minimal loss or even a profit.
what bike, Jim? any pound found on the wheels = 3 pounds found elsewhere.. so especially on a trackbike ( that already works well on brakes and suspension ) the weight will make a difference... your riding style also makes diffference... smooth vs choppy will emphasize the difference... it is said that braking under lean is more stable as there is less tendency to upright.. from 3 spoke to BST is the largest jump you can make... in 999 from cast to forged alu already makes a diffference... at 750 - 800 quid...
Interesting article about this in the current edition of Fast Bikes - makes lots of difference to their riders corner speed. I'd love a set myself. I often think that they are the ultimate in Bling accessories
Yep - you're totally right, I don't really mean Bling. I'm not sure how to describe it, but whenever I see a really smart looking bike the first thing my eyes are drawn to is the wheels.
Wheels for sale here.... http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f16/breaking-very-late-748s-5340/ I actually like the look of the 3 spoke Brembos.... Probably because they were the original 916 fitment and the first I saw when I first shot my load when I first saw a 916...
£10 says the ARE NOT magnsium ones for sale with that bike. Five spokes they would be, but cast aluminium, not magnesium
I'd spend money on my suspension first then wheels and go from there, unstrung weight, less gyroscopic effect it's one of the best enhancements you can do in terms of really feeling the difference.
I have done many mods to my 916 (tuning, exhausts, weight reduction, suspension, brakes etc), just about everything infact but the single best, most noticable mod was fitting lighter wheels.
The cast aluminium Marchesini 5 spoke wheels are the ones I see most often for sale. Are they the ones factory mounted on later Duc's? Are they worth the change weight-wise? I read that the rear was only 1 lbs lither than the 3 spoke standard wheel (12 lbs vs. 13 lbs) Jim
The OEM 5 spokes are a little lighter. Not sure it'd be enough to notice, but you'd defo notice either a change to forged ally/mag or carbon. I run mag marchi's on my 748 and they made a big difference to turn in and direction changes. For the money, i'd go forged ally if buying new. There's not much in it now between them, forged mag and carbon. OZ do some really nice ones, about £1800 for a set of forged ally. The forged mags i've fitted to D16RR as a 17" rear upgrade. I've fitted a few sets of BST carbon and they are stunning wheels, and whilst i've heard of no problems, i'm not sure I'd personally run with them on the roads we're blessed with around this neck of the woods at least...
Can I please mention that although these may not be magnesium as first thought (apologies)- they are off a red bike, which if your bike is any other colour, will guarantee -2 secs a lap...
They look like mags like I had some years ago, although the paint looks to be chipped in the first pic which may be costly if it's gone through to the metal, they'd need rechromating and testing for cracks.
Just checked with Ducati - apparently the webbing was dropped for the later bikes. This wheel was from a late S4R.
