1199 Termignoni Silencers - Why Are They So Heavy ?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by darko, Jan 25, 2016.

  1. When I pulled my Termignoni silencers of the 1199 I was more than a bit surprised at the weight !

Over the years I have had various pipes on my bikes and they were all noticeably lighter than standard, I had the Akrapovic Evo on the 1098 and it weighed next to nothing !

Honestly I cannot believe the weight of the Termignoni "performance" silencers for the 1199, why are they so heavy ? Has anyone pulled them apart ?

The silencers tipped the scales at around 4.8Kg for reference

  2. Chuck them in the bin.... or just leave them in my shed if you want.....

  3. Sure ! I'm just curious if Akras are just as heavy and if so why. I can't imagine the standard cans are much heavier but maybe they are ?

  4. After market cans vary naturally from one manufacturer to another, but since they are not bound by Eurocratic noise and emission regulations, are almost always lighter, given they've no need for heavy internal baffles, wadding etc, to meet specific criteria.

  5. it's true that we have come to think of Termi as a performance tuning item primarily and so also come to expect weight to be pared off where possible but the silencer on a Panigale up until the Euro4 959 has had to fulfill a different role as regards safety and longevity. Not only the exhaust heat but any excess fuel by fault or by overfuelling ends up under the engine and so needs a robust container unlike virtually all exhausts preceding this that eventually end up above engine height. Early plans to rivet on Termi emblems immediately revealed not only how hot the exhaust ran but the role that the system could (worst scenario) potentially have to play as the badges and rivets not only melted but also allowed flames to emerge from the rivet holes. I don't think the biking media got to know or have time to get alarmed but I wasn't surprised as I was/am amazed at what a good job that rather compact system does considering how compromised it is.

  6. I weighed the stock ones at 7.5kg so it's still a useful Saving.

  7. I suspect the exhaust design plays a very large part in the amount of heat under the seat on the Panigales. It will be interesting to see if the 959 system runs a lot cooler.

I heard Chaz Davis explaining yesterday how his WSBK exhausts this year will be straight through as there are no noise limits anymore.

  8. Thanks all, some interesting info there ! It seems Termignoni released a carbon silencer later which is lighter at 3kg so maybe that is their real performance silencer ? It also has a front exit so perhaps different routing. Interesting problem is that although this is on a race bike it still has to meet 105dB for meetings in the UK and it barely does that, I wonder of the Termignoni carbon front exit will be louder ?

  9. Wonder if the front exit is more to allow the bike to pass noise tests for racebikes as they are taken from the rear of the bike.

The reasoning for the 959 exhausts is partly because Euro 4 noise tests are done from the side of the bike.

  10. The carbon front exit termis are a lot louder than the ti ones,115db springs to mind when I asked a chap running them at silverstone Ducati day last year, he also said it fecked up the fueling in a big way .

  11. I've got a set of the Carbon Pipes.... Having them fitted in two weeks, they need a custom map to go with it so would properly f**k up the fuelling if you just bolted them on... hope they're not 115db!! I wanna get it on a few tracks in the UK this year!! MR said they'll try to get a Db reading when fitted... will post results once done...

  12. I agree with this, they don't have the 'loop' design that the originals did, so on our rear exit ones, the pipe runs in from the back, all along the silencer inside then loops and back along and out the rear.

The front exit ones halve this so may become more volume but I suspect the noise is a lot more.

Also, why would u want the exhaust gas exiting in front of your feet? I get that the theory is that the rear tyre overheats but you still have the link pipes in front of the rear wheel and with the front exit pipes it's exiting in front of your feet so when at lights etc it's right next to your toes.

  13. Akrapovic 'Evolution' system for 1299 weighs 6.5 kg apparently.

  14. Wow, 115dB would be impossible on UK tracks, might even be an issue in Europe. I have most of the system removed so I might take the headers off and weigh the whole lot to compare to the Akrapovic EVO 6.5Kg...

  15. How much do the carbon Termignoni silencers sell for in the UK ? I can only find USD or EUR prices online

  16. Do the carbon termi's have removable baffles? 115db is seriously seriously loud!

  17. No idea, I suspect not given the look of the exits on them

  18. No removable baffles on them.... would be very surprised if a chap got on at Silverstone with 115.... they are pretty strict. ( so don't think they'll be that loud) as for cost, I bought them from Italy... £1350.... buying them in the UK you're looking at 1600-2000 from what I've seen

  19. 115db sounds wrong, that's crazy crazy loud?

  20. It was a guy on a green 899 track bike in the jhp garage, he swapped to them during the day, then swapped back to termis because of fueling issues, said he was going to sell them on because they were just to loud, when he started it up in the garage it was noticeably louder than any other panigale at low revs.
