Just taken out NGK R DCPR8E and am going to buy some new ones. Should I upgrade or get another pair of these? I have some dry carbon deposits, quite a bit and was wondering if a plug that was designed for cooler temps would help?
I have fitted Iridium to my 999. They come with a pre-set gap that is larger than for conventional plugs, so gives a fatter spark. In theory, the fatter spark should give better throttle response but no actual increase in peak bhp. It should feel perkier though and have a steadier idle. Also, Iridium plugs are pretty much fit and forget and should be good for tens of thousands of miles with little or no attention. My subjective assessment is that the claims for them appear to be true
I did it at the same time as fitting a cable kit and new battery. Starting is now a strength of the bike, rather than the weakness it used to be.
I've always been impressed by the ease of starting my SSie, and it has a had a set of Iridium NGK plugs installed by a previous owner. I know some people have their doubts though. Fuel injection helps too I think - certainly when starting after a prolonged period of lack of use, because no float bowls for the petrol to sit in, deteriorating faster than if in the tank perhaps.
