I just thought I would share a few pics of how I installed my TomTom Rider 400. I had been searching the net for a while looking for some kind of ‘bespoke’ bracket rather than use the RAM mount it came with. I had also looked through this forum to see how others had done theirs. I have seen the Navihälter, but I wasn’t sure I wanted the sat nav above the clocks (time will tell). I bought a bracket from Hermann-Mechatronik ( Lenkerhalterung mit Gummieinlage für Ø28,6 + Ø31,8 mm und NAVI-Montageplatte silbern ) . Ordered online and delivered in 6 days, no issues (it included a free chocolate!). I have mounted the bracket on the left hand side of the handlebar bracket. I have yet use it in anger, but it seems to be ok.
Looks good. I'm using the previous version TomTom, I heard there was a few issues with this new one - how have you found it?
I pondered over which one to get for ages (TomTom or Garmin). I know there are lots of opinions for both. I played about with a BMW Navigator (borrowed from a mates GSA) and personally found it tricky to quickly plot routes on the device. I played about with the TomTom 400 at Infinity and it was simple to operate. I also got it for £235 at Sportsbike shop last year, so that helped. I have found MyRoute-app: The #1 all-in-one app for tour riders and hikers! a doddle to use to plot routes and install in the TomTom via SD card. The TomTom will also record tracks and you can the load back in to myrouteapp or Google Earth.
I used an app called Tyre for mine, it's a slow process for route planning when I want to choose the roads, wonder if I can use Myrouteapp.........
Before you try Navihalter contact GadgetGuy.net - Motorcycle mount for for GPS, radar detectors, XM radios, cell phones and other gadgets. They will custom drill the bike mount to fit your GPS mount. This mount fits the center bolts for the bars. If you use a tank bag you will not be happy, if not, this rocks. It is USA product. Very slick install for my TomTom Rider. The GPS sits just below the clocks and both are totally readable.
I've just mounted my Tom Tom 400 (premium pack version) using a ram bolt from Ultimate Mobiles (£14.99 fp) on the handlebar clamp of my DVT. I did consider the Navihalter but I was concerned about vibration, the look of it above the clocks and the fact it makes using the adjustable screen a little more difficult. I personally don't use tank bags and prefer to travel light, so using the handlebar clamp was not an issue for me. I've attached some photographs and I have to say I think it looks very neat and seems very easy to use. I went for the Tom Tom over Garmin because I'm able to use it in the car as well and I like ability to twist the device into portrait. A gimmick, I know but I like it. The premium pack comes with a car mount, charge socket (usb and sat nav), cables and locks for the sat nav device and adjuster. Believe me it looks better in the flesh than in the pictures and the device has a nice quality feel.
I personally opted for the Rider 400. I also got the car mount free through a TomTom offer. I found it much easier to use than the Garmin's. I'm really happy with the ease of use. Route planning I do if required through myrouteapp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
