999 Blowing Termi Silencer Box

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by yellowducmaniac, Dec 5, 2015.

  1. Just started my 999S in the garage to let it idle up to temperature, running my hands under the exhaust I noticed the front edge of the box is blowing at the seam, nothing major but it needs sorting, i've got a tin of gun gum lurking somewhere in the depths of my garage which I have used in the past on car exhausts ,should I plug it with this or get it welded?...advice welcomed.

  2. Lost count of the times I had my 999 Termi box welded up

  3. Settled on the easy option for the time being, plugged the seam with Gun Gum yesterday afternoon and left it to harden overnight ,started the bike just now and it looks like its done the job, and you cant really see where its been used...i suppose the tester will be when I get round to taking it for a blast and open up the revs a bit ...when the weather is permitting.

  4. Unfortunately I've been welding it too......:triumph:

  5. Poor quality Termi and if you think about it, quite a bad design

  6. Just had bad news from my mechanic, bike is currently in for a service and he's just told me my termi box has been extensively welded in the past ,which I already knew, and it has fractured yet again, he's had his top man on it and has advised me its past repair...:anguished:.

The cheapest second hand box on ebay is in Holland for the best part of £600...something I cant stretch to at the moment, looks like my only option is to refit my standard exhaust for the time being, i've never ridden a Ducati with the OE exhaust on it, how much quieter than the termi can I expect things to be?....

  7. Mmmm, they arent the loudest of exhaust designs. There were what looked like a decent pair of Remus exhausts on Ebay too if you like that sort of look, they sound very good IMO, about £300 last time I checked but they have been on for a few weeks now so the seller may take an offer.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  8. There seems to be a version of Termi with what looks like a larger brace plate spot welded under the top mount. I guess that would make this type a bit more resistant to cracking at least from around the mount on the top anyway.

  9. I have read sooo many posts now about Termi's breaking up you have to ask the question how the heck they command such a high price new and second hand. Load of crap, it has certainly put me off spending my hard earned cash on one.

  10. My thoughts exactly...i'm also beginning to think they are overrated tat (i'll probably get shot down in flames for that!)...has anyone had experience of alternatives to Termi's?...been thinking about the Remus items as mentioned above, anyone using them on here ?

  11. I`ve got Remus tail pipes. They are quite loud.
It was good fun scaring children and small animals to start with, but that soon got old. My ears would be ringing after a ride and I always wear earplugs. I had some simple baffles made. They only knocked about 2db`s off the noise, I think they maybe changed the frequency more. I can ride all day now without any problems.

  12. The ones in my profile pic are also stupidly loud, almost sound like completely open pipes, they came with a baffle that just made them sound awful so I ended up modifying the baffle with some perforated stainless tube. Now have a nicer deep tone without the all out noise. Slightly off topic now :)

  13. Remus specify two types of pipes for the 749/999,one for mono and one for biposta, does anyone know the difference between the two and whether they are interchangeable?...seriously considering getting a set.

  14. Not as far as I know. I am sure all pipes fit all models.

  15. These are the only pictures I could find of the mounting points, they look like they might be the same for both.
You would have to consider how much of the silencers will stick out from under the tail piece, on a mono there won`t anything to cover the tops of them like there is on the Bip. You can sort of visualize this in the second picture.

Do you have any pictures or measurement for those baffles? Mine are just a disc on a bracket with a hollow tube through the middle, they were just a stop gap to get through a noise test.

  16. Thanks for the info guys...do they just fit onto the OE pipes as slipons and does the bike run OK,or did you need to remap?

  17. It will run rich I guess since the slip on came with its own ECU.
Most of the time if you have the slip on you have the ECU as well.
Don't you have the Original ECU anymore?

  18. They fit on the OE pipes. Mine came with a Power Commander 3 already fitted and the front pipe has had the cat removed as well. It was running massively rich though, I was only getting about 75-ish miles from a tank, my mate said he could taste the fuel in the air when he followed me. I had it dyno`d, brilliant results, I now have better fuel economy and they got rid of a mid range flatspot.

  19. The bike will have its original ECU chip and Cats, I would only be replacing the OE silencer box with the Remus slipon cans.
Just had a look on the Remus site and they say no adjustment or remapping is needed.

  20. I ran my 05 with asymetric termi with std chip for about 5 years. Ran ok with a bit of a flat spot around 5k.
