Steve, if you scroll further down that article it says (and I got the numbers wrong) 150 Foggy reps released in 1999 and a further 147 in 2000. I'm only as good as the sources of information I have access to. Sadly if they are crap I'm going to look a right twat . Andy
Check the details, is it a 916 or 996 SPS? Does the headstock plate really show 218? I ask because I owned a 996 SPS number 218, registered 1999 purchased new by me from Southampton Superbikes. However mine had just over 18,000 miles when I sold it in 2005......but I am not sure if they produced a 916 SPS range and also 996SPS range?
OK thanks for the input. This is the score I have been offered a very nice 916 SPS (as described in my original post) for £9k. Additionally I have been offered a standard 916 in similar if not slightly better with loads of history for £7.5k. My gut is to go for a numbered limited edition bike as this would be more exclusive and hold its value in the long run. I understand around 1000 916SPS were produced, whilst not as exclusive as a Foggy rep it surely has got to be worth more than a standard 916. What would you do? And no I can't buy them both. I do recognize that prices are rising and don't want to miss the boat.
Sadly to purists it's all about the verifiable history and receipts. I have in the past appeared to be a purist but my heart says buy the 916sps. If you don't let me know and I will. Andy
916 sps the original. Of course same motor as 996 but original fairings Sorry gratuitous old bike shot
Sounds like you already know what you want, and I would agree, the sps will almost certainly hold its value better in the long run. @bradders nice bike, worth the gratuitous posting. Pete
The fairing decals are the later font as used on the 996 and not the 916 (if I'm correct) ... and the tank doesn't seem to have any decals on it at all. Otherwise it looks very tidy indeed
Buy it!! Think he said its the 996 version Dave. Although mine was a 98 916sps and had same decals on fairing. I thought the later ones had 996 on the fairing rather than ducati?
its certainly not 996 SPS version, they had 996 on the side of the faring and on the seat unit it had "Ducati 996 SPS" written in small letters under the vent. The 996 SPS also has silver grey 5 spoke wheels and a silver grey frame and Ducati written on the side of the tank. The SPS also had different front disk carriers and gold fork legs on the Ohlins suspension.
1998 SPS had no tank logos and the wider brake caliper mounts. That photo looks spot on,chrispyduck. Buy it quick before someone else does.
There was one for sale on Ebay last year (SPS top yoke that is) forgotten how to search sold items...
I fully agree with duke63. Buy it now. But don't tell us if you get it cheaper, the market price for this model needs to keep rising.
9k must be cheap as there is a 996sps on e bay at the moment for ...........£21.999 but it's ok as the owner says it's limited edition.
I didn't buy it ! Had it checked out when i discovered VIN number on reg document was different from VIN number on the bike. The subsequent mechanical report picked up buckled front wheel, acid damaged frame, oil leak, dented exhaust. I have now purchased a standard 916 so will start a new thread !
This bike is now on ebay at a dealer £6k more than i was quoted by the private seller. Cant imagine all the faults it had have been rectified. I was warned off this bike as it has too many mechanical faults.
