Long story short. I have a crease on the edge of the beautiful tank of my ss ie. Is there any wisdom on how to remedy this? Note:- it is a crease and not a dent. It's about 3/4 " vertical I'm not holding out much hope!
I don't know how you will remove it, but as to the cause it seems like the tank breather may be blocked......
If the crease is inwards you'll basically have to treat it as per a small send and may even have to dish the area immediately around it slightly so had you can blend the filler into the rest of the tank better. If the crease is proud of the tank, (though I'm not sure how you'd manage to do that!), then you've got more of a problem. You'd have to carefully dish it inwards in order to repair as above. The problem is that you may actually split the metal at the edge of the crease in doing so. Then you'd be into brazing or lead puddling etc. . If it were a normal, shallow dent you may be able get away with a 'paintless dent removal' repair, but I don't think that would work with a sharp edges crease. May be best to look out for a second hand tank if the above suggestions fail?
Thanks for your thoughts. I was hoping that , although a crease , it is in fact a reasonably shallow crease and perhaps Samurai's suggestion of a paintless dent removal thingy might work. I'm not sure how to post pictures on here. I'll have a shuftie about and see what I can do. Cheers again.
Removing the filler cap and surround gives very good access to the inside of the tank and especially to where your crease is. My advice is to take the tank to a good panel beater and ask their opinion as to whether they could get the crease out without damaging the paint - its what they do for a living and if they can, it shouldn't be an expensive job either..
Well, that's a dent with a crease in it; in my book........ Easiest way out IMO, is to fill it and see if you can get the paint blown in with a complete respray.
did hear of using dry ice to remove dents from car bodywork don't know if it works but guess it would only work on shallow dents ? but agree remove the filler for access and get a body shop on that
I had similar damage in my car door but a little more extensive. I took it to a spray shop and they filled and resprayed it. Cost me £140 but after they were done I couldn't see where the damage had been.
You won't beable to do a paintless dent removal on that damage. You'll need to get a SMART repair (Small to Medium Area Repair Technique) done. Basically a localised fill and respray. Call someone like Chips Away or a similar national mobile repair company and it'll be considerably cheaper than most body shops.
