I always thought these were the best looking of the 3 Supersport incarnations. I understand the carbs were rubbish but apart form that why are they not revered in the same way as the 2nd version?
Rich, they are very similar mechanically, as you say the Weber carbs are different and not very good. There was dodgy wheels sizes on the earlier ones too I think. I personally dont like the looks but as we know you have different visual taste so I'd say go for it. Its worth mentioning the fact that some spares such as bodywork can sometimes be difficult to het hold of as there was far less made but a lot is shared with later models too. Change the carbs.
I like the look of the 'neuvo' too. The weber is crap, a lot got replaced with delorto as a factory kit that was on offer. A set of mikuni and manifolds should bolt on easily as well. It got 17" wheels fortunately, (the 750 Sport and Paso got 16"). The marzocchi M1B forks are a bit basic, as is the rear shock. Due to crap carbs and running gear they never lived up to the name from the iconic bevel.
'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' Rich [emoji6] I'm not a fan of these early SS's myself, never liked the look of the vent below the headlight, much prefer the 92-98 versions. They did have a few issues too, the 16" wheels that the 750 originally came with and a few of the early 900's didn't do them any favours. Add that to the single Webber carb and a swing arm that fell apart it's not a classic.
In terms of looks I would say it goes like this 1. Mk 1 2. Mk 3 3. Mk 2 But you knew I would say that innit. I am intrigued. Are they cheap?
They are reasonably priced when they come up for sale, as they are less desirable for the reasons outlined
Never liked them that much, but i saw one with an ohlins front fork and black 5 spoke marchesini's. And that thing looked really good. Henk!!!
Although a bit quirky they do have something about them. Re-: prices – they haven't gone mad like the later carb models but have still doubled in price in the last five years. It would be worth you getting on the Paso forum as the ignition and the carb was shared by a Paso derivative as Keith obviously knows.
You might have a bit of trouble changing yokes. I put usd showa on my 907 that had M1R. The headstock bearings are a bit odd sized but I managed to get some with a bit of searching. Also the headstock is shorter than regular SS so I had to put a couple of spacers under the bearings.
You know what, I have to agree, thats the nicest one I have ever seen of that generation. Not standard though, tastefully done.
