Hi All Every so often at idle my 749 will cough through the air box and cut out. This happens at approx 1 of 5 stops at lights etc. I 'think' I have set CO to 5% on each cylinder but to me is still does not sound smooth. Do you think I need to try this again or could this backfire be down to something else? I have read about valve overlap on these models, is it something that we all just put up with? :/
My 999S was doing this every so often at traffic lights and sometimes when changing down to take a slow corner, when I had it serviced a couple of weeks ago my mechanic reset the fuel injection and idle, only ridden it a couple of times since but all seems ok, he told me that the fuel set up on the 749/999 bikes can quite quickly 'go off'...I also gather tweeking the idle speed isn't simply a matter of turning a knob like on most bikes...good luck.
Funny this should come up, i went out for a quick blast yesterday on my 749 and this plagued my ride. only seems to be an issue once the bike is properly warmed through. From what i've read this requires TPS, Throttle bodies and Co2 to be set up correctly. Due to all of this being beyond my technical know how, how many hours would it take a Ducati mechanic to sort out? just so i know at what price i get to the point of knowing my eyes are being ripped out.
The guy who did mine said it took him and his oppo the best part of a couple of hours to get things spot on, my philosophy is if i don't know what I'm doing then its best to leave it to someone who does...it was well worth every penny to get it done, also had to have a new clutch and whilst it was there got them to fit an Oberon clutch slave, again something well worth considering, loooaaads smoother, and quiet a bit quieter too...you will deffo notice a difference to the running if you get it all set up properly.
This is how you will sort out the cutting out. It's likely your idle revs will need to be raised somewhat - 1400rpm works for my T9S which is high but so be it. How long? Depends on how busy your dealer is. An hour if their business is ticking along nicely, or two, if they haven't got much money coming in at the time.
My tuned749R does this too on occasion. Idle speed set to around 1500rpm but still does it sometimes when cold.
Bit cynical Loz....some big dealers might be like this, but I trust the guy I take mine to to be honest and trustworthy when it comes to time taken on jobs, if I thought he was taking the piss I would be going elsewhere and he probably knows it... not to mention his reputation would be on the line, word of mouth recommendations are what a lot of indie specialists rely on.
My CO tester may be inaccurate. I've just been through the procedure again so I'll ride it for 20 miles or so later and see how it feels. Idles seems to be a bit up and down.
Have you checked the balance too? if it isn't running 'smooth' then the balance could be out but will mean adjusting CO again, but adjusting CO will put the balance out! I've found that a slight imbalance in CO levels but balance very close results it better starting and smoother running.
Yes, I have made a manometer that is really quite accurate. But after balancing throttles I found that after setting co I had to alter them to achieve best idle.
Took my 03, 749s out yesterday. Thought I'd give her a quick run while the weather's dry. Bloody hell, I didn't think I was going to get back. Seemed to cut out every time I went for third gear, and was then reluctant to start. I have had it cut out at the first junction after setting off before but on those occasions she started just fine and I thought nothing of it. I've also had the revs drop away on a couple of corners, which was worrying, but just rolled the throttle and she picked up again. Is this perhaps related to what you are talking about? Anyone with a similar experience?
As it's been sitting, is it possible you've had condensation in the tank, so water in the fuel.? I try to top my tank right up before hibernation but it's still not a guarantee.
She's only been sitting a couple of weeks. Is that long enough. Should I start her and let her tick over for a bit. Why on earth I've started calling a "her", God only knows.
A coupl A couple of weeks isn't long but it has been chilly, so I guess you could conceivably have had a fair bit of condensation if the tank was pretty empty.
