1200 Tough Decison

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by grin factor, Mar 5, 2016.

  1. Joined the forum a few months back as I fancied a multi, but having read many threads about problems etc, I'm not too sure now. The engine is what attracts me and will no doubt put a smile on my ugly mush, but I'm bothered it will leave me stranded miles from home & cost me in repair bills. Servicing costs can be high, M&S in Newcastle quote over £800 for cambelt service.
Am I being a fanny? Or are most bikes trouble free and only problems get posted?

  2. Your being a fanny!
Ive had mine 2 years now and apart from servicing it and a very minor electrical hiccup ive not had any trouble at all.
And there are many happy owners like me
    Just do it!

Or you could get a gs1200 and never smile again

  3. Grin factor, there seems to be problems with most new bikes these days. The cambelts I think are at 15,000 miles.
What you getting new or second hand ?

  4. Yeah it is mostly problems and whines that get posted, there are plenty that have not let people down, although there are always updates to improve minor issues, but that applies to all manufactures these days. I had a 13 plate did 12k trouble free, and my DVT has nr 6k trouble free

  6. Broke - It will have to be a used one probably 3 yrs old.

  7. You can see if you can get a discount, it looks mint and hasn't covered 7K yet, but it is 5 years old so should have it's belts done this year, you could use that as a bargaining tool...

As for the problems, don't worry about it. Any specific forum attracts people with problems in the search of answers so they tend to be over represented.

  9. i bought a 2013 1200s 2 weeks ago, after a lot of soul searching and worrying about possible things that "may" go wrong, my first non jap bike.

Just buy one and ride. you'll love it, proper superbike performance when needed, and a lovely relaxed comfortable tourer.

I'm trying to find reasons to ride it even with the crap weather we are having just now.

  10. Mine is an early June 2010 and it's been such a great bike I can't bring myself to sell it. I will be back down to Spain and Portugal in a couple of months where it will be in it's element and it has never let me down.
I am confident you will not regret getting one. Have fun!

  13. There'll be any number of the previous model up for sale as people move up to the newer more expensive DVT. A low mileage used Multistrada will most likely have been sorted by its previous owner. Having said that Multistrada's usually have higher miles because they're good tourers.

Keep your eye out on here, there's bound to be someone selling one soon and people who take the time on this forum are most likely motorcycle nuts that lavish too much time and money on their machines. Because we love it.

The black one looks like a perfectly good machine though.

Dukebird will be on here shortly saying 'But it's not red'. In this instance I have a tendency to agree with her. Of course, colour is purely aesthetic and your call.

Get one, relax about the reliability I've got a 47,000 mile ST4 that's great.

In fact a guy is selling a 20,000+mile ST3 on this forum, that's a good bike. Again, not red though.

  14. Go for it. I was in the same mind as you about the reliability and servicing costs. Coming from owning an Aprilia RSV I know all about electrical and reliability problems but I never regretted buying it, best bike I ever had. Ive tried all the other makes last year on demos, Ktm 1050, triumph tiger 800 and Sport 1050, Aprilia Caponord, Bmw XR1000, Ducati DVT and have just signed up to buy a S/H 2014 1200s multi. The other bikes were all great to ride but it was always going to be a multi they are just too beautiful to not be in my garage and I cant wait to pick it up.

As Gunzenbomz says, you only live once :)

  15. I can't agree more to what's being said above. Take that leap, be confident, my multi has been over to France and Spain with no problems. Going again in May. And just fitted a termi because I love it!

  16. Just do it!

There is no finer bike for hooning around on,chasing sports bikes, then getting the Mrs on the bike and enjoying a comfy powerful mile muncher

I went to WDW a couple of years ago, and couldn't have been on a better bike for touring round Italy, bike never missed a beat

I'm still on my 2010 MY, admittedly it's a pampered and plenty farkeld bike but it's been faultless! Needed a few recalls in the early days, but what new model doesn't? It's good that the manufacture is constantly updating and modifying. All well handled by the dealer

Only thing I would say, is keep on top of the cleaning, I've got to admit I don't think it's the best bike for our lovely UK climate, some of the fasteners will quickly show signs of corrosion! Keep on top of it and you will be fine!

I've tried the DVT and it's a great bike, but I still can't bring myself to change from what I already have

Go for it, I'm sure we will never look back!

Just do it, its worth it!
And keep on top of the cleaning, lots of ACF shpuld do the trick

  19. I did 30,000 miles on my 2011 plate, I did have a fair few issues, it was one of the very early ones, but all sorted under warranty. Still thin it's a great bike and I've just upgraded to a DVT
