1299 Engine Oil, 10w40?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by RacingDuck, Mar 1, 2016.

  1. Is it ok to use 10w40 engine oil on a new 1299 base model? I know the manual states Shell 15w50 but have 3x4 liters of Castrol Racing 10w40 laying around and wondered if I could use this when changing oil?
PS. I live where hot temperature (above 30 deg. Celsius) is no factor:confused:

  2. Users manual states that 10/40 is fine, provided you ride within the ambient temperature range that they state for that grade of oil.

  3. Yeah but is it okay to mix different grades of oil?

  4. we have all done it at some time but if bike is new/under warranty then no option but to use what manufacturer states.

  5. This is from the 899 Owners Manual could not find this page in my 1299 manual.....
Would think 10w40 should be just fine. image.png

  6. Not quite sure why you would spend all that money on a state of the art bike like a 1299 and then use old oil you still had in the garage to save £50.

  7. The Castrol Power Racing 10W40 will be perfectly fine, it's good high quality fully synthetic oil.

  8. Whating to put some decent oil in the bike its track only bike. i use motul 300v 10-40 on my zx10 will this be ok for the 1299 ?

  9. 1) That oil will be fine.
    2) It is not ok to mix different engine oil in any bike. Use all of one kind, or drain and change everything.
    3) what duke63 said.

  10. 2: why? Not being argumentative, just would like to know the reason.

  11. Hi @Cream_Revenge. No prbs. I was told this by 3 independent moto mechanics and tuners (caveat I am not an engine mechanic) as the different viscosity and mineral composition of each, behave in their own unique way. I've always been told to never mix numbers, even in a car. Also, I was shown a report of Motul and Motorex, specific boxer engine oils of the same viscosity, and they were very different in their makeup for obvious reasons. The filter will have also picked up the coating of one oil and so it's best to change that too if you're doing anything more than a small ml topup.

Is it going to do serious damage - likely not, but if you mixed a shot of JD and a Hibiki 17 would you have a nice glass of 2 blended whiskeys - also no. Just my opinion.
