1200 Anyone On The 1200r Yet

Discussion in 'Monster' started by spanish, Mar 12, 2016.

  1. Exactly the same for me. I had a 2013 Speedie before I bought the SF. I loved it but was always left wanting a bit more. The SF gave me what I wanted.
If the standard 1098 is aggressive, get em blue-printed and tweaked and they're truly naughty. But even then the 1290 KTM is actually faster, particularly in the mid-range. The bottom end is not as aggressive though and its easier to ride with a more relaxed riding position. And the seat is like an arm chair.

  2. Went on a ride out today, about 40 bikes. No Ducatis sadly but someone had a new Speed Triple R in black and yellow which looked really tasty. And I agree the finish was very impressive. And it looked really tidy.
I do wish Ducati had made the 1200 Monster look a little neater. They were much cleverer at hiding the plumbing and wiring on the Streetfighter.

  3. No, the Yellow/Black one is the run out '94R' edition of the old Speedy. New one is a big step up over the 94R.

  4. It was a '65 plate. So new bike then but not the new model. Wonder if he got a knock-down end-of-year/old model deal... Still a lovely looking thing though. The white ones had got a bit boring.

  5. Know beauty lies in the beholder but think the 1200r is the bees knees and reminded of that by Ian's photo. The sound of the 1200s was also to die for and hope that has not been strangled for the sakes EU regs. Be interested as to know how things go.
Personally excluded rage KTM on looks!!
Though have an R on order will need to remind myself of practicality so plan another ride on an S sometime. Apparently no R's available as demonstrators.

  6. Yep - the 94R is still being sold as a new bike in Triumph dealerships, and you can get a discount on them. Easiest way to spot the new one is "Triumph" is in 3D on the new one, whereas the old ones were a decal.

  7. Interestingly, when I mentioned to the Triumph dealership that I intended to try the M1200, they were dismayed and immediately said they thought the Monster would win!

  8. I've spent a fair bit of time on a Speed Triple R, my friend had one and I've ridden it a fair bit at faster road speeds, it's nice but it's almost too smooth, plus I really don't like the snatchiness of the throttle from closed throttle to back on, also very heavy clutch!

I MUCH prefer the Monster 1200s, and imagine the 'R' would be better, I really like Monsters but would consider the KTM at around 13k, just seen a few rough used ones that have put me off a bit, that said I've seen a few Ducati's that haven't been looked after and it ain't pretty!

  9. Ducati have a 1200R in the roadshow test bikes if you can get to one of the days.
    Ducati UK Roadshow 2016

To be fair i thought it was a pretty sporty riding position not dissimilar to the Streetfighter. High seat and low bars and definitely intended more for the sporting Monster rider.
The bike is also pretty quiet due to the new regs but it spins up so quickly and smoothly.

  10. Thanks for heads up re Ducati Roadshow. The new Cambridge Dealer just down the road so an opportunity. How does it work- can slots be booked for test rides or is it first come first served?

  11. You can pre-book through the dealer.

  12. Thanks. Be interesting to compare to the BM s1200r.
Just want to be sure I can live with it in my real world that includes weekend away.

  13. The S1000r is for people who like in-line fours and don't like twins. They will see it as smooth (though I think they're actually quite buzzy). People who like twins and aren't that fussed about I/L fours will see it as fast but bland. Each to their own.
The Monster will have way more bottom-end and mid-range grunt but up top the BMW will win with a howling top end. Trouble is I think that's the wrong way round for a naked.

I was in the fast but bland camp. I like character and not the generic, extends to my taste in bikes. After the demise of the Streetfighter I bought a new Tuono. Love the bike, Aprilia, well Piaggio UK, are a nightmare.

I'm hoping the M1200R will be good enough to get me back on a Ducati. Test ride will tell. But ease of use isn't a great selling point for me. I want exciting and challenging. Like a pissed nun at a dog fight.

  15. Looks good (the bike :grinning:) and I think my 821 stripe looks similar enough that Mrs T might not notice the difference....

  16. Picked mine up on Sat 26th. Brought home in a van as it was lashing down. Not been the best weather for biking , & still not been out on it yet!!:eyes:

really? wow didnt' think the superduke was reachable

I was considering the new Speed Triple... I wonder how the seating position vs the 1200s/r

  18. Expected delivery of Monster R end of April but trying to be sure is the right thing to do. Presently 5 years on a Multi. Ride out on a base 1200 Monster this morning from Ducati Cambridge (really helpful people) and a stonking bike. Loads of torque, surprisingly comfortable, wonderful audio from the exhaust and biggest surprise was so little wind buffeting. Almost less wind noise than on my Multi!
Next step, hopefully, is to ride the R on the Ducati Roadshow at Cambridge in a weeks time.
Weather has been good so any feedback from those who have their 'shiney beast' would be appreciated.

  19. Hey spanish

What can I say. The bike blows all my expectations (as I knew it would). Done 200 miles so far. The power, (even staying within the 5-6K break in zone), the stopping ability coupled with the noise form the Termi's is something that can't be fully explained, only those who have experienced it will understand.

Blipping the throttle whilst waiting at junctions/lights makes people aware of your presence, most of them angling to get a closer look at what is causing that 'spitfire sound' :eyes: so close in the street.

The bike certainly has presence, both looks and sound, and more power than you really need (and probably will never use) - but thats not whats its about. Every thing on the bike feels easy to use, and even the mirrors give a lot of rearward view. Its silky smooth and totally vibration free. I brimmed the tank when the petrol light came on and it cost £13. Not bad. Its currently averaging 58 miles to the gallon. As per the 'operator manual' I've been riding - soft, med & hard through, short shifting, and also using all available revs in each gears, (short shifting is the nuts). Gawd knows what it will be like when I eventually use all the the higher revs, but the torque it produces now is nothing short of 'stonking'. Ive ridden bikes for over 30 years, supersports, to big trail bikes, to laid back cruisers, but this is my first V-twin. For me, none of my other bikes come close to the power, sound, looks that the 1200R.

Ive never ridden a Multi, and I'm sure they're great, but I don't think you'll regret going for the Monster, its a truly awesome piece of machinery.

Oh, and it looks pretty cool too, just sitting there, in the garage

  20. I'd love to try the R as the 1200 S. I had as a loaner was great bike. Just my feet kept catching under the frame moulded pillion pegs.
