Problems painting Carbon ?

  1. So I am looking at getting the bike re sprayed back to the original Ducati Red that it should be...

I have a few carbon parts and when discussing with the paint shop (nameless for now) they asked where the carbon parts were purchased. As soon as I mentioned the top fairing was from QB they didn't want to know. Something about the paint not taking to the carbon very well, even explained doing a brand new QB carbon tank that took so much work it cost £600 just for that. Now I am not naming QB in an effort to put down their product quality, simply so I can find out if people have stumbled across anything similar when getting their carbon painted. I am generally happy with the QB carbon I have so am not naming and shaming!!

Has anyone had any similar problems with carbon after market parts when having them sprayed. The spray shop in question is by reputation top notch and I appreciated his frankness, I am going to take the bike to them and they will spot test to see if the job is 'doable'

  2. I have wall to wall carbon on my Caterham and the nose cone is half painted and it is fine. They might think keying the surface as prep is an idea.

Bear in mind, your carbon may have a lacquer finish on it.

  3. yes the laquer may well be the problem...I don't know I am no expert so will get a post test and see where we go from there

I may have a top fairing for a 996 for sale if I can't get it sprayed.....

  4. Be interested on how you get on as I have some carbon bodywork that I need painting.

  5. your painter is talking crap , i have painted carbon both ways , stripping the paint from carbon and re lacquer it and painting carbon from scratch its all a mater of preparation

  6. I got the top half of my carbon tank painted red with the corse stripe . Proper painter did it so no problems.

  7. Well my painter said possible but explained that real carbon parts that are made to be light are more work then others.

As example he used my mud-guard that when brought up to light is a bit see through. Apparently then you need much more layers of prep as it all sinks into the tiny gaps between carbon strings. It will then make the part as heavy as any other carbon. Still had no issue just warned me.

  8. get a new painter .... prep the carbon just like you would any surface.

  9. I have a pair of carbon Yosh cans on my carby which although in good condition could do with a better gloss finish to the carbon...

Would be be a case of fine wet&dry/water & then a heatproof laquer?

  10. Luca quality carbon fiber isnt see thru.
