999 Service Interval

  1. my 999 had a major service this time last year. i was going to use it last summer but didnt get round to it.
putting it back on the road now. question: do i really need to change oil and everything? its been a year, but bike only done 50 odd miles last year , but i did start and run it regularly untill around october last year.
can i just use it as it is? or would it do any damage?

  2. Should be fine :)
Might be an idea to let it idle till the fans cut in.
That way any water that's got into the oil via condensation will have a chance to boil off.

  5. You should be changing less mileage vehicles oil more frequently in cars /bikes...If you don't put a lot of miles on your car you need to go by time rather than miles for oil changes. Blowby gasses in the crankcase condense to form all kinds of nasty acids that can literally eat up your engine. On a car that is driven every day these condensates get "boiled off" by engine heat, but on a car that only takes short infrequent "trips to the store" these condensates can build up in the engine. So if you have a "granny car" that only drives a few hundred miles per year you should change the oil every 6 months to a year regardless of mileage.

  7. Any damage that may have been done to the engine by failing to get the motor and oil hot enough over a period will have been done.
If the oil has only done 50 miles and is decent quality fully synthetic with anti oxidation additives etc., just getting it good and hot now should be fine.
Of course, if changing it will make you feel better, then go ahead.
Can't see any point in changing the filter though.

  8. Oil degrades over time, regardless of high/low usage. Obviously more miles then more frequent oil change as will degrade even quicker. I only do 200-300 miles annually on the 749R, but still change it yearly as a minimum. As Old Rider says, your filter will be OK
