1200 DVT Rear Wheel Distorted, Out Of True!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Robbieben, Mar 27, 2016.

  1. My bike has been parked up since 21/12/15 until Good Friday 25/03/16. It's been in the workshop nice and warm, gave it a good clean and ACF 50 treatment, checked and adjusted tyre pressures, lubed chain etc in the week prior to going back on the road. No issues with the rear wheel.
Took the bike out Fri morning for a run round and back home, approx 50 miles, no issues at all. After lunch set off to Richmond N Yorkshire, 2 up with my wife to visit family, again no issues all was well on returning home. Approx 80 miles.
Saturday 26th went to meet a mate for a ride up to Westgate Rd in Newcastle, arrived on Westgate Rd and noticed a shiny patch on rear wheel where the paint has been rubbed off where it has contacted the plastic trim that sits above the swinging arm.
On further investigation it looks like the wheel rim has somehow gone out of round/true on the inner nearside edge.
Has anyone else had similar issues?

  2. I had to have both the front and rear wheels of my 2012 (not a DVT but I can't imagine there is much difference) straightened after hitting a massive pot hole. They both had a flat spot that I noticed when cleaning the wheels, nowhere near big enough to rub on anything though!
They were straightened by Motoliner in Maidstone who commented that the aluminium is very soft. Seems strange that a bike with off-road pretensions has soft wheels.

  3. I know I haven't hit anything. Potholes or otherwise. TBH the wheel is that far out of true I'm sure it would have damaged the tyre had I hit something.
Only possible explanation I can think of is that it has distorted through being hot /warm and parked on that spot whilst on the side stand

  4. does the wheel wobble side to side or does it have a flattened in area when you spin it?
there is no way the wheel would distort from heat and being stood

  5. The 3 spoke alloys on early 748/916 bikes were infamous for being easily damaged and I managed to bend mine without any sign of damage to the tyre and with no recollection of hitting a pothole (or anything else). I had it fixed by Motoliner who did a good job.
Thought the wheels were stronger on all the later bikes but I guess the make of tyre (and the strength of the tyre casing) may have an influence.

  6. Side to side alignment is perfect except at the point where the wheel is deformed. At that point it's out by 5-6mm but that is caused by it being flattened in.
I don't agree with you regarding heat not changing the wheel. Aluminium is easily deformed at very low temperatures. ( I'm an Engineer and we use low heat on Alloys to change the shape and structure).

  7. Did you & your misses mount the bike on its side-stand? Keep us informed of the outcome

  8. No. Mounted the bike in the same way as always. Leg over and stand the bike up, Sidestrand up then the wife claims on. Left foot on left foot peg. Steps up and sits down. Nothing out of the ordinary.
    That's what's so confusing.
I've spoken to Ducati Leeds and I'm taking the bike into them tomorrow. Hopefully it will soon be sorted.

  9. ;)

  10. I'm sorry, there's just no way this can happen through being parked up or getting on or off, if the wheels were that weak they would collapse the first time you went two up or any reasonable speed.
Im with Hyper, you must have hit something two up and the suspension disguised it, still piss poor though.

  11. Well bike is in the capable hands of Ducati Leeds. First opinions expressed are that the damage is very strange and distortion is not typical of impact damage compared to what they have seen in the past.
Very kindly lent me a 1200 Monster to have fun on in the meantime whilst investigation continues. I'll update as I learn more myself.
