Brake Lever Fell Out On Motorway...

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Crosara, Mar 29, 2016.

  1. Hey all,

Yes the adjuster bolt on my brake lever fell out on the motorway, luckily I eased off the throttle to turn into a slip road about 10 second before I realised this and was able to stop using the engine and rear brake in time.

I'm kind of a beginner-ish when it comes to bike mechanics.

It looks like the manual adjuster bolt thing has fallen out, so when I pull the lever, it isn’t actually pulling the brake.

Can somebody tell me the actual name of this part so I know exactly what to look for. I’ve attached an image of the clutch lever (with silver knob/bolt still in there) and an image of the brake lever which had the same thing in there.

    Hope all that makes sense!

  2. What bike is this and are they standard levers?
Usually, adjusters only affect the amount the lever stands off the bar, so the adjustment mechanism wouldn't affect the operation of the brake itself.
Also, your levers seem to have the ends missing.
I think I'd be inclined to replace both levers with something safer.

  3. Yeah, good shout, I was thinking about getting new levers. I don't want anything to extravagant or expensive though.

This is a Ducti 748 T Reg (they don't look like originals, and it looks like the previous owner did intentionally remove the ends!)

  4. I've got the sub twenty quid, cheap Chinese levers on mine and they work fine. You won't want to wait for levers to come from China though.
I seem to remember a recent post where someone got some pretty nice levers for not much more than fifty quid - name brand as well...

  5. The Spring on my ASV leavers snapped while touring Scotland last week. This is how I got home. image.jpeg

  6. Wow! Not sure I could trust that on the motorway!

  7. I didn't have a choice everywhere was closed for the bank holiday. It lasted three days so didn't do bad.

  8. It's only the return spring - looks very resourceful to me :)

  9. They look alright yeah, tempted to buy those, just called a Ducati specialist place and he's got some a Brembo clutch lever for £120..... and he said he has a used break lever laying aroudn which he'll through in for free...

Don't really want to spend £120 though. What's the quality on these like...?

  10. ah damit, they do don't they... I was swinging towards those as well, what do you think about my other post about the Brembo brakes (I'm only keeping this bike until the end of April as I'm getting a new one don't really want to spend that much)

  11. IMO they're just as well made as the originals, can't remember exactly but I think there's a circlip holding the adjuster assembly together same as OEM, you will need the plungers off your existing ones.

  12. When I was 15 I had the ball missing on the end of my clutch lever on my trials bike. I lost my balance to the left, put my foot out, bike fell and the clutch lever went straight through my boot, foot and stuck in the sole of the boot. My mate had to pull it out and i went to A&E. Luckily it went between the bones. I'd be getting new levers.

  13. So many words which I'm not sure about. Sorry.

Plungers? Google only brings back the ones covered in the brown stuff.

  15. Okay I think I'm going with the Brembo ones, even tough they're more expensive, AND I'm selling the bike in a month, they sound safer, I like my feet and boots, I get to buy them face to face and make sure everything I need is with them, I get them today, so more train to work this week and the bike will be easier to sell with nice Brembo levers.

    1999 Ducati 748 in Red anybody? :)
