So, thoughts turn to the aesthetic. I quite like her as she is, but she is rather beaten up on the side I have not pictured. Originally she was yellow from the factory. I'm starting to quite like yellow, there, I said it! And having her back as she left the production line seems right somehow. But would OEM red make it easier to sell one day? Or, I could just leave her, I have the 996 for best. Would be nice not to worry to much. Can track day her like this. Then there is the one-off paint job. I love the MV AMG, maybe something like that but Ducati. Would it suit the 999 shape? I will be getting the wheels powdercoated either black, OEM grey/silver or the same grey/silver as the 996 as I like that colour. No right or wrong answers here. Be nice!
A full repaint be it Yellow or Red would be my plan. Admittedly I would do it myself so it would cost a fraction of what a professional would charge. If you have the tools do it yourself, and if you have to buy a compressor (etc.) then make it a good one and you will find it will last you many years with money well spent. My compressor has made and saved me a lot of money over the years that I have had it. The best investment toolwise I have ever made, nothing has come close in terms of return over expenditure.
Has to be red or yellow for me. Yellow if you want it to be different from the crowd, red if you want people to see a Ducati coming from miles away
I don't dislike it as it is and as you have a red one already that would do for me, if you really want to change it then red's the only colour I'd change to. Steve
That US-built 'Motion 999' was a big inspiration for my '999 Italia': particularly the front fairing and the black barge-boards. They somehow managed to emphasise the lines rather than trample all over them... I really like the paint line on the tank but since my bike is a relatively rare Mono Nero I decided not to paint the tank at all. My original fairings are bubble-wrapped and in the loft: I bought a set of unpainted cheapos from Hong Kong. I think it depends what you plan to do with the bike: mine was a keeper and I wanted to create something unique but not too outlandish or race-rep (although I do love the Fila/Xerox 999s). If it's not your main bike or you just want to track it I'd just get your existing fairings patched up for now and then see how you get on with the bike before spending big bucks on a full re-spray...? cheers, Dom
If your thinking future sale and you actually like it !!!! back to yellow is the sensible choice but don't do it till your ready to sell.
I think it's fine as is. But if you wanted a change (and especially for the track), you could get cheap white fairings and then just paint them according to your choice. I'd probably think of a brand I liked and then do a pseudo brand paint job. I don't know. Say you liked Bovril, you'd do a paint job of what a Bovril bike might look like. I think a Johnnie Walker Black Label bike in black/gold would be cool, but then I like JWBL and used to work on it. What about a Cadbury's cream egg bike? Something a bit off the wall like that.
