999 Questions After 1st Ride

  1. Hey
1: do I have to wait for temperature numbers to stop flashing before heading off?
2: is starting to ride with the temperature gauge flashing even though it was +40℃ why the engine warning light came on?
3: whilst the temperature gauge hardly went over 80, the pipes got HOT! The rear fairing plastic was hot to the touch when I got home. Normal?
4: engine off, parked up, the tank is whistling Dixie. Open fuel filler and it stops, close filler and it starts whistling away again. Normal or a blockage somewhere?

    TIA.

  2. 5: how do I eradicate the foot peg vibration?

  3. 1) I always ride as soon as the engine cranks up, and take it easy until temp stops flashing.
    2) Engine warning light should not come on because of this.
    3) pipes hot - normal, plastics - not so normal , unless you've been giving it the beans.
    4) Tank shouldn't be sounding like a kettle.
    5) Foot-pegs should have 'some vibration present'...:grinning:

  4. Warning light went out after about 60 seconds and didn't come back in the hour I was out, I'll monitor.

Always give the beans, but was sure warm.

Why would the tank be whistling?

  5. Probably a partially blocked breather pipe if it does'nt whistle when you undo the filler cap. Make sure the plastic breather pipe inside the filler cavity is routed properly and isn't kinked.

  6. Where does it route too? One of the front breathers?

  7. Its a clear plastic pipe about 6 inches long that routes into a metal pipe inside the filler cavity ,it branches and leads to the front 2 breathers.

  9. Yep

  10. You could cure all them issues by going out on the 996 instead

  12. 996 has different issues, now more identifiable after an hour on the 999.

  13. My last three bikes have whistled from the filler cap. Nowt to worry about mate.

    A Kwak
    A Yam
    and now the Duke.

  15. Is it a "feature"?

  16. To be fair, I don't find mine vibrates too much but in general a big v-twin is going to be a bit vibey...
Mine actually felt a fair bit smoother after getting the ECU mapped at CJS - smoother and more power so win-win! :)

  17. 996 does not vibrate through the foot pegs. 999 ride/engine/clutch/gearbox generally very smooth. Totally non-snatchy on the throttle. 996 is VERY snatchy on throttle.

  18. Cream, none of them like engine loading much below 3k and the 748/916/996 are particularly harsh if they are not set up precisely - even then you don't let the revs drop below 3k on the older bikes as they get rough and snatchy, use the gearbox. If your 996 is snatchy after 3k it needs some finessed tlc for an accurate ecu and throttle set up
