So I was out for a ride, having a jolly good time. Clutch lever felt strange, then ok, then strange again. Then OH MY GOD WHAT HAPPENED!! My clutch fell out!!! Main nut seems to have undone itself so now I'm in pub waiting for my bro and his van. Oh and the plates killed themselves on way out before I get told I should have changed them, although it was time anyway.
Hi Joe, it was me and Char that stopped in a car and spoke to you, glad you got back ok mate, and you'll soon be back out on the road
Small world, cheers for stopping guys. I'm still in pub but worse places to be stuck. Bro be here soon.
First feeling something wasn't right was about 10 miles from where I ground to a halt, so my guess would be cover is between here and there. Has anyone seen or heard of this before? I was in total disbelief when I got off and looked at it. Knowing how tight that nut is on there I simply cannot fathom how it has come undone!
no, never seen a complete 'off' but i bet someone like Nelly has, majority of times people get a clue from the vibration and shut engine off in time. Lucky drum didn't fully escape and hope engine not damaged as a result.
Yea good job it got stuck although it has eaten fairing as a result. Thread on end of crank looked ok on first inspection and it was still running fine when I stopped so hopefully not too bad. Thoroughly displeased with the situation though, ruined what was a very good bike weekend up to that point.
The OEM and more substantial after market clutch covers (e.g. JHP) would have contained the clutch after the nut came loose. Can you see evidence of the cover failing as the spinning drum made contact with it? I can see score marks on the spring caps, but cannot see the cover bolts clearly enough to tell if the cover failed at the mounting points. At least you still have all of the major components. All you have to do is reassemble and torque to the required value. Are you the original owner? If not there is probably no way of knowing whether or not the nut has been undone and then insufficiently re-tightened.
It was a sturdy cover and yet there is no evidence of how it came off. All bolts are there but no damaged bits of metal hanging around. I am not original owner but I fitted that clutch and it was torqued up properly to recommend nm. Although I know what has happened I really can't get my head round how.
we all use medium to high strength loctite on those nuts Joe (both ends of crank) as it's a weak area and either side can still come loose despite correct torque applied.
Looking at your picture, your clutch cover has given up the ghost with the impact from the clutch. It looks like you can see a piece of the cover still beneath the retaining bolt. I know you said it was CNC with only the inner carbon fibre, but I was told years ago to avoid carbon clutch covers as you may as well put a one made of cheese on there, you need something substantial to hold the clutch in, or stop it being damaged in the event of a fall. The JHP ones I have on a couple of bikes look to be bullet proof, as said above.
