Stepped Front Tyre

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by abmatt2002, May 30, 2014.

  1. Hi all.

The front tyre on my diavel is really badly stepped. The bikes only done 1500miles and the sides are nearly down to the wear indicator but the centre is fine. There's a good few mm difference in the step.

I did have this issue with the pirellis that came on my 848, but never did when I switched to dunlops.

Sorry the photo is the best. Could get.

Any idea what could cause this?

    Cheers

    Matt

  2. not braking hard enough ;)

  3. Typically incorrect suspension settings. The front preload is a manual adjustment. Get this right first then play with electronic compression and rebound.

  4. The Diavel with a slighhtly longer wheel base is known for pushing the front end which will lead to uneven tyre wear. My girlfriend's Diavel had the exact same issue with the first set of tyres. Unfortunately 3 days hooning around Cartagena hasn't done any good to the second set. The Rosso is a nice tyre but I have a feeling we will be looking at a harder compound tyre that works with the Pirelli rear in the not too distant future. Andy

  5. @Android853sp thanks. I'm now a massive fan of pirellis and unfortunately with the diavel the choice is pretty limited. Well one choice really!

The rear is wearing really well, it'll out last the front by some stretch.

  6. The Scorpions went the same way on the front of my Multistrada. It seems to be a trait of most Pirelli tyres.

  7. I agree that uneven tyre wear can typically be the result of soft suspension. Unfortunately the stock Marzochis are set very soft out of the box and the Diavel seems to prefer that. No suspension electronics on the Diavel just manual pre load, compression and rebound adjustment and it's none the worse for that. Tyre wear is going to be the one compromise when setting up suspension, talk to Rossi and Lorenzo about tyre stiffness, handiling and tyre wear :). Andy

  8. I lost Rossi's number when I changed phones. I don't suppose you have it to hand?;)

  9. Road camber has an effect, and I have put angel Gt on the mutly,so far I rate them, and probably much longer lasting than rosso

  10. Sorry to dig out an old thread, but I have the same issue on my 899 with a Rosso Corsa, it's done 2100 miles and it's really badly stepped and the tread is 'lifted' creating a raised edge, totally standard suspension settings.

I also had this with my 848 Evo on Super Corsa, and a few dealers said 'Duc's are just hard on fronts' but I put Dunlop Sportsmart 2's on my Ducati and they were perfect with 2k plus miles around Scotland etc, unfortunately according to Dunlop's site they are discontinuing the 180/60 rear tyre that I need (I am aware that potentially a 55 would be okay but would rather stick with 60).

Anyone noticed an improvement having had the oil in the forks changed and/or getting th preload set up? I have to say I have never had a Pirelli front tyre that hasn't gone out of shape, even had the problem on my Daytona and that was set up for my weight and re-valved forks.

  11. How fat are you?

  12. After doing some research into this the conclusion I have come to is that a certain amount of cupping / feathering / scalloping is a natural phenomenon caused by the movement of the tyre blocks in normal use.

  13. 14st on the nose mate 6ft tall

  14. Skinny bastard then, but still 5 stone heavier than an Italian test rider. Check the suspension settings against a mates who is not having the same problem.
Whenever I've come across this one up and one down pattern. It was been down to incorrect suspension settings or broken suspension.
Get that fixed and it never returned. I've had it on loads of bikes.

  15. I get what you are saying but I never had a problem with the Dunlop Sportsmarts on my bikes regardless of set up, the obvious answer is to try and see if someone has some left in stock in the size I need because my front suspension feels fine. If I need to change them both I'll take it to JHS and get it set up while I am there.

  16. Under inflated tyre?
