Do Ducatis eat clutches?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by noddysbestfriend, Oct 18, 2012.

  1. Or am I just unlucky? My previous 800 ss needed one at 8000 miles as it was slipping. My sons 620 monster needed one at 11000 miles - slipping again, and now my 750ss is slipping. Ok so it's done 21000 miles and I don't know if it's already had one but crickey they do love em! Seems like the brake pads will out live the clutch. As you've probably noticed they are all wet clutches so is this normal? It would be easier to swallow if it were'nt £170 a pop - my Cagiva raptor was £50 for a set of EBC plates. Still love the bike though 'cos she's worth it'.

  2. My 998s started slipping at about 8000. Dry clutch, so bit cheaper than yours, and very easy to change out.

think you are right, though, clutches are on the breakfast menu for these, and they are worth it :)

  3. Answer to your original question is no, however poor riding skills may well do.

  4. A dry clutch will wear the friction plates quicker than a wet clutch due to the excessive heat build up, especially if used in anger. Clutches re supposed to wear out, but it may be worth experimenting with the tension at the clutch lever

  5. Are you using the right oil ? Has to be wet clutch compatible, not just any engine oil due to friction modifiers and such.

  6. Depends on how you use it . I can get my clutch plates from new to knackered in a single day at the track. Thats the sipper clutch for you though . I usually get a bit more than one day at the track though but not many more than two.

  7. ive got a slipper clutch and i only do track days, ive got to ask wtf you are doing with your clutch or how its set up for it to get through a set of plates in a day or two....

  8. The only track days I do now are at the nurburgring 10 laps is 130 miles . Usually only go to bike only invite days now where the track is fully open and you can do as many laps as you are capable of in about 5 hours . After 2 days my clutch needs repacking as it starts to slip. Full on racing slipper clutches are exactly that they dont do longevity. Another plate will see another day but thats about it. This is the clutch and I can assure you it works as it should. The bike dosent go dressed like this to the ring though.

  9. and you have a 48 tooth basket

  10. I'm liking the black and red tank alongside the mirrors, did u do it yourself? Also noticed the bottom fairing by you pegs with the black inlay. Are they special to the 999r you got, I've got a standard 749 and would like to start to add extra tastefull mods to it.

  11. Tank & mirrors carbon I reckon.
    What's the clutch?

  12. The fairing is the standard 999R carbon fairing . The black bits you can see are carbon. As is the tank and mirrors which are aftermarket parts. I had the top of the carbon tank painted red with the corse stripe to match the front mud guard.

Clutch is STM Evolution , which is the best clutch I have had on a ducati , but it was expensive at £1350 including the tools that are needed to fit and remove it.

  13. I'm still liking, just noticed the sat nav, got the same one so were did u get the mount from as would like to get one for mine, I've used a company called RAM mount for my other bikes but your looks very solid.

  14. I make , and repair , a lot of parts myself . The mount and the clutch cover are my handy work made out of Ti. As are the bar end weights although they are stainless for the weight.

  15. Could I be cheeky and ask how much for the mount?

  16. Ha HA . I could make you one but it would take me forever as I have so much on and very little time at home I could take a close up photo and you coud probably get one made local to your self though.

Cant work out how to add a picture to a message so here it is. It was made out of Ti in about 2007 and is easily removed I wanted it like this so that it remained static when turning the bars . Coud do with a polish but.

  20. Does the 48 took basket and plates make any real difference? I plan on replacing my clutch over the winter and was thinking about 'upgrading'
