1200 Is It Just The Multi?!

  1. This is a wind-up, right? You do know the actual story behind the third year warranty thing, don't you?
    Or maybe you don't.

  2. No I don't but would be interested in the story given I get my new one in 3 weeks!!

  3. last time i worked for a dealership (long time ago) pretty sure it was a third party that underwrote it.
warranties are often staggered lets say 7year warranty often meant 2years for electrics 5years for running gear 7years for corrosion.

  4. 2 year old Multi s touring 7000 miles touchwood no issues at all

  5. OK, try this for size.

Ducati assemble motorbikes, but they don't make parts themselves (excepting only cranks and cams) - they buy all parts in from hundreds of suppliers, contractors and sub-contractors. The contracts provide for the supplier to replace defective parts at their expense if the defect comes to light within two years. That is how Ducati have always been able to provide, and still provide, a two year warranty period. The factory's exposure to claims is limited because the risk is spread out among hundreds of contractors.

The third year extended warranty (when it was offered) was provided on an entirely different basis. It was a contract of insurance between the buyer of the bike and an insurance company, with the insurer providing cover against certain risks in return for a one-off premium. The snag is that strict legal requirements apply to selling ("broking") insurance, and you can do it only if you are a registered insurance broker. Motorbike dealers are not registered brokers and cannot lawfully sell insurance, so the extended warranty system had to be ended. Registering is not a simple process, and most Ducati agents are not in a position to do it.

It would be difficult, expensive, and complicated to re-instate some form of the old, insurance-based third year warranty. It would also be difficult, expensive, and complicated for Ducati to switch all its many contractors from two year to three year liability contracts. And it would be a terrible gamble for Ducati to shoulder the entire risk on their own. So far they have understandably not managed to implement any of those options, nor to clarify when or whether they ever will.

That is my understanding such as it is. If anybody knows better, please let us know.

  7. From what I'm hearing the Multi reliability may have gone backwards with the DVT!?

  8. My DVT has been in the Dealer today for the 2nd time!
Once for the 600 mile service and today for the 9000 mile service.

  10. Have noticed it only comes up when the bike is powered up while on sidestand and holding bike upright while powering up its fine so I figured an accelerometer in one of the sensors front or back had gone ...... plugged in today at Seastar Ducati and confirmed as rear sensor . Will be replaced under warranty FOC next week and bike is perfectly useable then its done ;)

  11. So how come other manufacturers continue to offer extended warranties?

If they can't/won't sell warranty insurance does that mean no dealer warranty on a used bike.

Sounds like the uk underwriter severed ties and no one else has stepped in under the official banner.

  12. Didn't seem to be an issue from my experience, Riders happily offered me a third and fourth extended year warranty from a third party.

  13. If Ducati offer a manufacturer backed (ie they source the supplier OR they cover costs via backed-off policy) they have an obligation as an intermediary to ensure the product is sold correctly and within FCA regs, which includes training and certifying dealers. If a dealer does it, they choose their own and apply same rules.

Simply put, Ducati dont have an obligation to provide one, nor to administer the network by having nothing to do with it.

Short sighted it may be, pushing all the used-stock warranty issues to the dealer (who by law are obliged to guarantee for a period of time) but does that stop them selling new bikes?! Not a jot. In fact, does it help them sell more new as people now trade in earlier...

  14. Mine did this in its 1st year, I discovered that if I sat on the bike before starting it, the light wouldn't come on. The modified rear sensor has a longer lead, no problems with this since then, I have however had two fuel sender units (second one lasted 600 miles). And just had a map sensor failure , all this with under 3000 miles on the clock.
Bike now all sorted & will be sold, simply hate things that break . It's a Pikes Peak edition.

  15. It would be interesting to see how the percentages work out with faults etc. on Ducati bikes 10 yr ago, and now, think people forget that Ducati are selling a lot more bikes these days, especially Multi's over the last few years, thus see more problems, but probably less and more reliable than 10 yrs ago when you equate the numbers.

  16. I've had Ducati since 1983, currently have three, and have to say that the Multistrada has been the worst finished and least reliable of the lot.

  17. Possibly more people are using forums to complain than 10 years ago .. ( Quite rightly with the Multi which seems to have the problems of 4 bikes in one..)
