Importing Bike From Europe

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Simone Carbonara, Apr 11, 2016.

  1. Hi

I moved in the UK lately and I brought my Monster with Italian plates.
I would be happy to register the bike here but I've read some of the discussion in this forums and it seems not be easy.

As of now I have the CoC from Ducati (6 months to have it) and need to apply for the Mutual Recognition system to have the vehicle approved for registration (that will be another burden)

One of the conditions that int the VCA form is that I nee to provide

Original Garage evidence that the vehicle meets the UK national requirements (UK headlight, dual marked speedo)

M1100 2010 has Speedo that can be changed and the beam light is a flat one meaning I don't need to do anything.

The only burden is to provide Evidence to submit.

I've been in some Garage (where I'm supposed to obtain a paper saying that the bike is of) but they say they don't do it and that I can go to any MOT to submit this evidence. Unfortunately the VCA doc says that they don't accept MOT certificate (that would testify that the headlamp is ok).

    Anyone can help?
    Many thanks

I would have thought that any motorcycle MOT testing station could provide a suitable letter, especially if you offer them ten pounds of so for their trouble.

  3. I've just been through all this to get my Spanish Honda fire blade registered over here. It's taken ages to get sorted but got it done.
Took it to an MOT place and got the mot certificate using the frame number.
Applied for the NOVA form, filled it in and sent it off. Waited 2 weeks to get it back by which time HMRV had informed DVLA that the bike was ok to be registered. (No VAT to pay as bike was over 10 years old).
Sent all paperwork off to DVLA along with £136. 3 weeks later job jobbed!
Sounds simple but took nearly a year to get all the paperwork together.
    Hope this helps

  4. Hi thanks for your reply.
When did you tell hRMC about your bike?
Also my buke is 6 years old...should i pay any vat?
I have my bike in Uk since a year now......

  5. Yes, you'll have to pay something, not sure how much...
As for the date, only put the date on the form once you have all the paperwork together. They say that after only a short time, (can't remember how long), you have to have it registered here. I don't think they're too bothered about the dates though as I first applied for mine over a year ago.
If you pm me with an email address, I'll send you the NOVA form which will save you a lot of hassle.

  6. Why do you have to pay vat on a European import - the vat will have been paid in Italy when new?

  7. Don't know! :)

  8. Ian thanks

    Ill pm you.

Weird because my is used bike and Vat was paid 6 years ago......

  9. yes paid already. i bought used in Italy..so dont believe i need to pay.
My concerns the declaration of import in Uk which i dont have as I had my bike moved with all my belonging trought the moving company.

  10. You should be OK with VAT if the bike was your property before you moved here, you probably need a receipt to prove when you bought it. However you should have registered the bike before it had been here 6 months.

  11. Hi mikey,

What if its more that 6 months?
Am i going into a fine?

  12. I'm not sure if you will get a fine although DVLA might ask for excise duty for the past six months or more.

The risk you run if you continue to use it is the police could impound it and demand a release fee after it's been registered. Although judging by how many vehicles on the road the with non UK plates it's a low risk. There was an old story on the BBC about the police having a crackdown on it.

  13. True Mikey,
Fyi im not driving it since end of summer....its in my garage waiting to being registered here.

  14. You should be OK then.
Though it's difficult to prove it was off the road, DVLA might say you need to SORN it and you can't do that until it's registered ( a classic chicken and egg problem).
Hopefully it won't come to that.

  15. you don't need to pay VAT , but you will be fined (probably a lot) by HMRC for not completing NOVA within 14 days of motorcycle arrival to the country

  16. ^ good point. Before I left Spain (I lived there for 17 years), I went to the local traffic police station in Seville and had them stamp up a certificate of permanent export.

  17. Hi Sev
what kind of permanent export paperwork you refer to?

I have the CDP (Certificato di Proprieta) but not the digital version of it.
All the bike papers I have is the CDP and the Carta di Circolazione
I did not export the bike thourh the Radiazione per esportazione because otherwise they will seize the Carta di Circolazione.

  18. I'm here since april 2015

I can't tell as I went back and forth a couple of times....in Europe (France) but I don't have proof of it as I always brought the bike trough a van of a friend.
What If I can provide any evidence of entering to the country with the bike?

  19. I would not worry about proving anything, I doubt if there will be any problem.
There are thousands of Brits driving around France and Spain who do not live in the UK and have illegal UK registered cars and bikes here.
