Smith, Flea on bass and until recently, Frusciante on guitar. That's a lot for your money. Add in fantastic songwriting and you end up with a top band.
ive met chad smith a few times. the last time was when he did a talk @ Drumtech in London. he was a very nice bloke and didnt lord it over the students there, and was very honest about his abilities and approach.
Everyone including O.P. must know that this just can't be answered as it's not just the ability to play the thing but the content and composition that appeals and in that aspect we are sooo different with our requirements. I've been looking at some Petrucci videos on YouTube. It confirms my suspicions. The guy is lightening fast, but so much of what he chooses to play seems like exercises to see how fast you can play. The slower stuff sounds like the poor man's Gilmour. A great guitarist certainly. But how much do you really want to listen to him? And that guitar sounds grim. So many metal guitarists have a tone that sounds like a keyboard. What's the point of that? I'm totally unconvinced by Kramers and BC Rich. When I went to Sonisphere, the metal guitarists all sounded interchangeable. Trebly distorted tones - heard one, heard 'em all. Tonewise, still think that Fenders and Gibsons rule (though I liked Santana's Yamaha SG and his PRS). Why did Yam stop making the SG? It was a very beautiful guitar with a great sound.
i ve got 2 Guitar : Paco di Lucia... the emperor of Flamenco. Saw him live in brussels playing for 2 hours just sitting down and using 1 just guitar first hour alone, then with one more guitar and a box-drum ... just the tuning of his guitar would have broken most of the favorites above's fingers... and the there is : Live at the Al Mocambo : Stevie Ray Vaughn and double trouble..... i agree wit the 'see me play fast' ... i also see this in Satriani, and Roberts, ... i's like half their guitars are left inside... all axcellent technicians but not really great guitarplayers... its what il like in SVR squeezes every little bit of sound out of his Fender when it matters and can be so very light and sweet in the slow stuff...
well yes, his younger brother quite an accomplished flutist in his own right is called John but I guess you meant the fraudulent flower salesman? :wink:
