Hi All, Ive just stripped my 996 to check the valve clearances and to have a look at the rockers as there was some flakes in the oil, however on inspection the rockers don't seem to look bad, there are two that have flaked but not on the face but on the side (I've added some pics) my question is would these be ok to run for a bit longer as its not on the face? thanks in advance. Matt
I'd be happy to run for a bit longer if it were mine, however if any flaking has started it's only going to get worse not better. I had my ST4 rockers refurbished by Dave Newman Cams (look em up on Google). They replace the whole ramp part with a stellite pad which is far harder than the chrome. Ran mine for about 6000m before I had to sell it and they were like new. I know that Rich at Luigi Modo experimented with several different companies who purported to be able to hard chrome them again, but the results were crap. He now used DNC for all Desmoquattro rockers now. The only thin we found was that you're best off replacing them as pairs e.g. both inlets or exhausts on the same head as the profile is everso slightly different to the originals and you may experience a very slight vibration through the footrests type of thing, due to the minute difference in the valve opening with its partner. Nothing major just a bit annoying. Few years since I had them done but they were about £80 each for the reverb from memory.
