Helmet Camera

I have a pair of Gopros which I can fit front and back on the bike, but they are too clumsy for the helmet. I have just acquired a Polaroid Cube plus, it is smaller than the Gopro and has image stabilisation built in. The results with a 1080 60 fps video are better than the Gopro 3 blacks that I have and it will sit nicely on a helmet. I bought a case from ebay which attaches it to gopro mounts.
I think that it was about £125 from amazon.

 

Look into the Drift ghost S and Contour cameras, they should be available in budget and have rotatable lens's so they're easy to set up.

The drift does 1080/60 but I think the Contour is 1080/30.

I tried a Sony AS100 and the picture is amazing but getting an external microphone into it is a nightmare, using the internal mic means wind noise, lots of it.

Used a GoPro for skydiving, admittedly not quite 3D as image but pretty good footage, just be careful of going too "HD" if you don't have a powerful pc / Mac it v difficult to edit 4K footage

 

I never use the sound off any of the cameras and would think that any of them in a case would be rubbish.
I bought the cube case separately from ebay and that case fits the gopro mounts, I have loads of those. I have even seen a cube video with the cube inside the visor on a full faced helmet and the video was quite good.
The main thing is the image stabilisation on the cube, it makes all the difference.
The other thing about the cube, is that being a cube in shape it can fit any of four ways inside the case so that the mount can be on the side of the helmet.
The cube also does time lapse out of the box which the gopro doesn't.
You can save money and buy a cheap Chinese camera, but as the processor is much slower than a Gopro or a Cube, they are not well suited to bike use where they move faster than they would in other situations.
The cube is the same size as a Gopro Hero4 Session.

 

Worth considering that helmet cams are one of the biggest causes of broken necks in motorbike accidents. Helmets are designed to slide when you crash and not have bits that can twist your head around if you hit grass or a drain.
I know they're designed to brake off, but you try and muscle one off with your hand, and tell me you neck could take that strain if it wasn't expecting it
Also, they create an annoying amount of wind noise

Good point Gra, the 3m tape used on GoPro fixings is so strong that the BPA (British Parachute Association) mandated that if using a GoPro helmet mounted camera a "cut away" system must be installed to release the helmet in the event of an entanglement

 

Health and safety has gone so mad in the UK that individuals on forums are trying to teach people to suck eggs these days! No offence intended.
I very much doubt if any small cameras that I own would not break off even if I dropped my helmet. I quite often ride without gloves or jacket in the summer. I sometimes have a helmet cam on my lid. These are all risks that I as an individual take. I have never, in 40+ years, fallen off and slid my helmet down the road.
If I did not want any risk of injury then why would I ride a motorcycle in the first place? How many people still smoke and risk life and limb doing so, I would suggest that we put the minimum risk of a helmet cam into perspective.
The thread was an adult asking about different cameras and not asking for safety advice.

 

If you ignore all the health and safety stuff, the wind noise and my head pulling slightly to one side from the drag at high speeds, would literally do my head in, if you'll excuse the pun

 

I think you'll find I was replying to Graeme's comments and cameras on helmets are also a serious danger in the world of skydiving. My previous comment referred to editing 4K footage For which I have extensive experience. As with all forums you take comments at face value and mostly with a pinch of salt. BTW who asked for an opinion on smoking ( I don't ) and riding with or without safety equipment!!

 

Is a helmet cam more dangerous when filming in 4k than it is in 1080? It was the risk warning that I was referring to.
I never use the 4k mode on my Gopros as I don't have anything that will see 4k and I find that 1080 is fine on my big TV. I have no problems editing 1080 on my windows PC at all.
Not many people on motorbikes are going to get their helmet cam tangled with parachute lines. I can't even remember wearing a helmet when I last jumped out of aircraft!

 

Remember to buy decent branded class 6 or 10 SDHC memory cards. You will be limited by either 32gb or 64gb max memory size!

 

And avoid swans. They can break your arm with their necks

 

Have a look on the IAM website, they just love recording their rides.

 

..and more overly caustious warnings! Wearing a watch will mean you might get your hand ripped off in a crash..wearing a chain also encapsulates the same thing but you're beheaded.
