Got some M8 x 70mm stainless bolts for new chain adjusters - the heads were polished off by Mark at Stig's Stainless Fasteners - This is where I have sourced all my stainless fasteners - Great service! The swingarm will be back from Engine Reconditioning - Darlington, Cleveland | North East Engine Serviceson Monday. I have decided against drilling out the disc bobbins at this stage. I have also decided to use the original (reconditioned) carbs. I am going to get it all built up and running for the summer. I'll need something to do next winter anyway, so that's the plan... Once I pick up the swingarm I think I only lack a chain.
How bad are the discs? Mine were proper minging and I thought they were scrap. I used a product called Wonder Wheels on mine and I rescued them. Here's what they look like now. I posted up some stuff about it on this forum a while back. It may be worth searching for it if you go down that route as you have to be careful with it.
bugger! yes they're going to spoil the show, I've got a pair of cleanish EBC discs in the garage if you're interested, could do as a temp solution maybe? I'll fish them out over the weekend. EDIT: discs in question are from my 900ssie donor, pictured, I rode it for several months to verify it's suitability, it was fine, but I had a pair of Brembo discs and eventually fitted those to the project as they were more aesthetically pleasing. (shan't be offended if no use to you)
If you were that bothered, paint them. They have cleaned up ok, at £200 EACH for new discs I would suffer the slight dirty look. Hope none of you ever see my bike as mine has a less than mintness about it. :fearscream:
Hi Phil, Mine were also in a similar state like yours and just simply cleaned them and painted with heat resistant paint. this is how they look now
The top pic looks worse than mine. Mine were worse than the second pic though. Wonder wheels will get rid of all the surface marks. It works great on alloy like the bottom of the fork legs. Just make sure you mask off anything shiny and use it close to a source of running water to wash it off quick. The other option is to paint them as said above.
Dont worry, it wont look mint. I'm not repainting the fairings, and they look 25 years old! can always do them later. but the engine and frame have to be done at the start.
Made a little more progress - had to source some 3mm spacers for the inside of the carbon mudguard to hold it off the forks. But nor fits, and the wheel is on! Waiting for a new speedo cable before I add the headlight and front fairing.
As i am putting it back togerther, im wondering which grease to use where. I have Lithium, Copper, and Molybdenum. I filled the swingarm with builders expanding foam - that captured the remains of the M6 bolts left in the box section. No rattles! if you do this put bolts in all the screw threads first. maybe leave one out so it can breath. So, i have working M8 chain adjusters. Also, purchased some aftermarket glassfibre half fairings, for when i want to show off the engine. they are going to be painted black. the glassfibre is no where near as nice as OEM plastic but a lot cheaper! they came with another headlight fairing... interestingly, it has a grill behind the air vent. neither of my other ones have that. is the grill a 600ss thing or a date variation (datestamped 1992)
My SL has the grill and its OE as far as I'm aware - it's a '96, but the fairing is dated 92. Maybe in this context, the datestamp is meaningless. Sent from my P01M using Tapatalk
