Peak District Road Recommendations.

Discussion in 'Touring' started by Ducat1, Apr 18, 2016.

  1. Hi, will be staying in the Peak District for a night this week and seeing as the weather looks ok it seems like a good excuse to take the bike. I'll probably have a couple of hours to kill and wondered what are the best bike roads in the area. I've heard the A57 is good but don't know the area at all.
    Any recommendations

    Thanks

  3. There are loads of good roads, so long as you don't mind ignoring the blanket 50 mph speed limit that seems to have descended onto the area in the last few years.
Are you looking for nice scenery or are you looking for hooning roads?
    Some favourites of mine:
A5012 from Cromford to Newhaven (via gellia)
    A53 Leek to Buxton
    A54 Congleton to Buxton
A623 Baslow to Chapel en Le Frith
    A525 from Ashbourne to Buxton

If you have any choice, ride as early or as late in the day as you can. I am really looking forward to Euro 2016. When England play the roads are really quiet, and more so if/as the competition progresses...

  4. Cheers - just looking for some quiet twisty roads with nice scenery.
    Will check those ones out.
    Thanks.

  5. Where about are you staying? I have a nice route I often take on a sunday morning, From Bakewell to Calver, Hathersage, Bamford, Snake Pass over to Glossop then Chapel En-Le Frith, Wardlow Miers and over the Monsal Head back to Bakewell, lovely scenery and great roads.

  6. Think Ive got most of that in my plan. I'll ride up from London to Sudbury then A515 to Buxton. Then the A6 to pick up the A523 to Calver. From Calver I'll go up to the A57 then across to Glossop then the A264 to Chapel-en-le-frith near where I'm staying. Next day I'm going to donnington so will probably just do the A53 from Buxton to Leek then across. Would like to see more but a bit tight for time.
    Sound sensible?

  7. This is a great route taking in some of the best bits of the high peak, you can get a brew at the visitors centre up at the Derwent Valley, just before or after Snake Pass, depending on which way round you go, this is where the Dam-Busters practiced during WWII. Also Winnats Pass Castleton is pretty spectacular.
Which ever roads you take you'll love it!!

  8. Great, thanks for that. I'll go via Castleton instead of straight down the A623.
    Cheers.

  9. I used to work at the Blue John cavern when is was a lad and used to enjoy riding up Winnats Pass. After a days work we would ride down what was left of the old Mam Tor road. We had scramblers back then and you needed them.

  10. FA Cup Final is always a good time for a blast :upyeah:

  11. @Ducat1 did you ever do this ride and if so did you enjoy it.

  12. Just looked out of the window and its absolutely lashing down here.

  13. Cleared up about 1pm as forecast then a lovely afternoon.

  14. Yes thanks, it was a great few days - fantastic weather and quiet roads. Managed to cover all the recommendations, the highlights being snake pass and the A53 from Buxton to Leek. Winnats pass was unexpected and fun, not so much fun coming back up though with the sun in my eyes...

Thanks for all the input - you guys are so lucky to have that on your doorstep
