Monster S4/r, Multistrada 1000ds /1100 Or Tuono Gen1 Or 2? ...your Help Wanted

  1. It's that time when unusual indecision has suddenly set in with my next bike choice, and I'd love some of your experience and thoughts to help steer me in the right direction...

I've already got an ST3 2006 3v, low miles - FSH - etc. I like it, but don't quite love it, so it's going to go to it's next good home - soon.

I've loved my previous RSV Milles, one of them chipped with Arrows pipe :grinning:... SV1000 and Firestorms and sold them due to aching wrists and back being an old fart now. I preferred the Aprilia's out of them. Had many in line Jap 4's and don't like them so much any more, they don't suit my riding style and preferences for a variety of reasons, had a R1, early unrestricted Busa, and loads else over the decades. Started big bikes with a new GT750B in 1976! (worth over £10k now)...wish I'd bloody kept it now!

Had about six different Triumph triples, and don't fancy another one thanks.

Now, here's my predicament. I'm 6ft 3ins tall, and need something for sunny day blasts and occasional 250 mile round trips. I'm in my late 50's and still have this odd thing about me. I love speed and cornering. Not as much as some nutters, but I love it still. I need to get in and out of traffic - sometimes central London and can keep up with most dispatch riders in London traffic if my shoulders aren't too painful :frowning:

So, I like the looks and sound of the following:
    Monster S4R
    Multistrada 1000DS or 1100
    Tuono Gen1 or 2

Which one do you think would best suit and, what would you have given the choice, and why?

Thanks in advance. I look forward to reading your comments when out of hospital after my Ultrasound and Hydrocortisone to ease my shoulder pain.

  2. I had a Tuono Factory a few years back. To this day, it's one of the best bikes I've owned.

I'm 6'1" and han no problems fittin on the thing. It had a lot more upright seating position and wider bars than my current Streetfighter. If you like speed and cornering, nothing comes close although as you can imagine; wind blast is an issue once you get close to triple figures.

The only problems I ever had with it was the usual misting dash and back then there was quite a wait for parts, but I believe ths has improved.

  3. Very, very nice. I just looked and that and got all excited - yeah, even at my age :grinning:

  4. You

  5. Another vote for gen2 Tuono. Awesome bikes. I loved my mille but never owned a Tuono so can't directly compare but the Tuono would probably be as awesome and more comfy

  6. Gen 2 Tuono more popular than a Duke on a Ducati forum. Wasn't expecting that!!

  7. Why aren't you considering a Tuono V4?

  8. Budget being the main one....and I've too much else to pay for (mortgages and people :)

  9. Ah, ok...

  10. If you are looking at the Tuono and Multi then the Falco is worth a look, a friend had one and loved it to bits before he decided to get something newer, he went through 4 bikes in a year trying to get something as good as his old Falco... It also had the advantage of setting off car alarms as it thundered along, childish but awesome.

  11. Yeah I know, they have the same awesome Rotax engine as the Mille and Tuono. A great bike, but it's the riding position as mentioned earlier in my post that steers me away from those type bikes because I'm an old fart and can't put my poor shoulders and back through that much torture any more, although I wish I could :grinning:

  12. I would have thought the Monster would be a bit cramped for someone your height. Less harsh ride than the Tuono though. Does the budget stretch to a 1200 Multi?
If you want comfort, cornering ability and power I'd say try a 1290 Superduke. But this is a Ducati forum so I'll keep quiet about that one. :Muted:

  13. I have met two Aprillia owners through this forum, one a past owner and one present.

They have both mentioned the terrible parts/dealer network and reliability.

How about an S4RS? Although like Gimlet says, might feel a bit small.

  14. I'm 41 and have had a stiff neck and bad back for 6 months now, am seeing an osteopath once a week so feel your pain.

Am considering a Renault Twizzy, how about one of those?

  15. Good call. The 990s are good value for money.
I have back problems and I find my most comfortable bike is the 1290. Its not as head down as the Streetfighter or as the monster would be, and its not bolt upright either compressing the spine but about halfway between the two which seems to be the best compromise for me.
I'm in a bit of pain this morning and I'm wondering whether it was a good idea to ride a Thunderbird cruiser at a Triumph open day yesterday. Feet forward and hands forward isn't good for the back especially when the suspension is harsh over bumps, which it was..

  16. I had my Vespa (Piaggio) in for a service a while back and the dealer is also an Aprilia dealer. While looking at an RSV RF in the showroom, I was talking to the owner of the dealership about parts supply. He tells me it's fine now. Anything he doesn't stock, he'll call Aprilia and have the part within 3 days. I've known him for years and he's a decent, honest bloke.

I never had any problems with reliability while I had my Tuono. Build quality was perfect too.

  17. I've had x2 gen 1 Tuono's either side of the 996 Biposto in my avatar and both were more reliable.

Very light and very lively :)

I'd have another in an instant if I could find a low mileage one or definitely give serious consideration to the 990 SMT.

I'm building a 900 Monster to pootle around on but miss the hooligan nature of the Tuono sometimes ;)

  18. Multi 1100. Best real world road bike, bar none.
