Im a chef by trade but have always fiddled with bikes ,i have owned 60 bikes in my biking career since 1978 i still have 10 of them in various states of repair normally only have one on the road , if i have 2 on the road one will get sold and replaced with a project . i have a very large garden so i built a very large workshop and garage so it made scene to include a spray booth. And the first few jobs i did paid for the equipment and i was given a hydro-vain compressor for free, for years i have been messing about with rattle cans and getting very good results but when i got in to 2 pack paint that is very hard and sets like glass my spray jobs got even better. the reason i don't do it full time is the time factor I just love fiddling with bikes
and i even have hans solo to help with the polishing ,and i do polishing as well i will do most things from a frame to nut i was thinking of doing a polishing service for the stainless exhaust pipes and swing arms and wheel rims .I don;t like doing the whole wheel as it takes ages
I hope you wasn't joking about me sending you bits in the post to paint! At the end of my tether but I won't give up! Had a look at the fairing today with a bit of cutting paste. Put it on, rubbed and nothing.....kept on going....nothing....a bit more...paint came off. FFS. Cut a long story short, not enough lacquer, not even close. I thought f*ck it and sprayed a massaive patch on the end of the fairing and it looked like it was supposed to look like! Then I put a thumb print on it and messed it. Sanded the wet lacquer and it's gone down to the primer. So tomorrow, I'm sanding the top layer down till I get a bit of paint and then respraying with Radiant Red. Then on Friday I lacqeur all over again. Properly. I'm so jealous of the space you have. My girlfriend is buying a house and she has agreed to find one with a lean to/garage so that I can start doing work there rather than at my workplace. I can't wait, I see why people get into all this stuff. What projects do you have going on at the moment?
I have lots going on at the moment a 620ie in need of paint but i have been upgrading the booth as when i first built it i made a lot of mistakes but i think its better now as it is a metre wider alowing me to get around the jobs easer, i aso have a mates Z1300 being rebuilt and a triking sports car im building for him not much time for my stuff still got the 900ss half built and the 750s almost done also got a fireblade with a ratly engine but i think i may break it to get my money back as i dont think with the work needed i will have any profit in it . Or just sell it on as a project
What are you doing with the 900ss and 750ss? And what needs doing to the Fireblade? I'm considering a project bike when I move into new house. There should be a Project thread which isn't related to ducatis. Would love to see what you're doing with the other stuff.
the 900ss is a ongoing project bought as a box of bits , the 750s was just neglected and needs tidying the fireblade was bought for £500 with a big end problem i think it needs a crank and i dont think i can be arsed with it did have big plans to do it in urban tiger colours with a single sider , but i think it will cost at least £200 to put right so it may be my first breaker
Hi John, So I painted another coat on Friday. It looked great apart from the douche bag fly that decided to take a dip in the coat. Plus, it was very dusty so I had bits all over the place. Let it dry and wanted to do some today but didn't have enough time as I'm doing a job today. So, did a very light and quick nibbing of the dust particles and laid a couple of lacqeur coats down. Needs a couple more coats so I'll let it dry. Also, should have decals coming this week, so going to flatten and then put decals on and finally lacqeur. It won't look showroom but should be good enough.
Right, lacquered, G3'd and buffed to death; In the sunlight (ignore the chipped engine case, I have a lot of work to do lol!) Fairings side to side... The OEM fairing is a deeper colour so the newly sprayed one looks a shade off. A bit disappointed with the colour but hopefully once on the machine with decals, it shouldn't be that noticeable. However, I'm very pleased with the finish, especially for a first time. Could of been better with a bit more patience on my half but a big thanks to Motojohn, Al and Gillan 900 for their help.
top effort that mate for a home job I'm about to undertake a single colour job with rattle cans on a set of track fairings, probably be reading this thread every day for tips!
I can impart any knowledge I know but John is the man in the know! I'm going to paint replacement mirrors now, a nice red rather than the cheap finish it had.
Nissan red base, radiant red top coats works a treat to match the red tank on my 851! (painting single seat unit) Just about to clear coat it now! Thanks Al Top advice
View attachment 4964 These are on the way from holland and need repairing any tips on easy clear coated decal removal without getting tennis elbow ?
Just getting rid the DESMO one on an OEM fairing took a bl**dy eternity...........and it left a permanent witness mark despite rubbing down, cleaning etc etc. I reckon you will have your work cut out. AL.
Yep, the Supersport decal that I removed was always there no matter what I did to sand/fill etc. Made the fairing look warped from certain angles
