have seen only one drawing (lacking dimensions) of the 900ssie frame, it's on page 178 of this book: (it appears similar to the carby frame save the rear subframe, which looks almost identical to the ST2, to my eyes anyway)
That's brilliant - thanks very much. Would you be able to scan the page and send me a pdf? If its scanned flat, I think I could work out everything I need by proportioning against the basic engine bolt dimensions (A and A1) - these won't have changed, even if others have, although as you say its likely only the rear is different. I seem to vaguely recall something to the effect that the head angle might be tweaked a bit (1/2 degree?) - is this mentioned in the guide at all? Sent from my P01M using Tapatalk
ok, pdf att. (hope its ok?!) key points, steering head angle 26 degrees, frame tubing 25x2mm, trail 100mm, wheelbase 1395mm. Author states that Terblanche was under instructions to maintain original ss dimensions of the fuel tank base, (I swapped a carby tank with an ie tank on their respective frames when building my hybrid)
Again, many thanks. I won't be able to print the pdf till I'm back home on Sunday, but looks good. The other info is also very useful - perhaps strangely, but I've always preferred the look of the later subframe, and have/had entertained thoughts of rebuilding my SL into an IE frame (accepting need for minor mods of course). The unknowns have been steering angle and the (supposed?) poor ergonomics of the IE riding position compared to that of the carby. Hopefully now I'll be able to quantify the differences. The uncomfortable riding position of the IE's I think is down to the clip-ons. The type fitted to the carby's sit at a slightly different angle which makes a big difference. Anyone who's fitted the later SS/IE forks onto a carby SS will know you can't fit the old bars onto the fork legs due to the chamfering. Having done this on mine I found some nice aftermarket clip-ons that had a very subtle angle to the bar which was perfect, didn't have to move the nose cone at all. I'm sure someone on here has fitted carby panels and a SL seat onto an IE, just can't remember who it was... [emoji53]
I've said it before but I couldn't live with the IE ergonomics so I built the hybrid, each to their own, when I dismantled my IE donor I took the opportunity to offer various bits from that to the carby and vice versa, in the top left of the att. image you can just see the yellow IE tank sitting on the carby frame, apart from the rubber support blocks being different it fitted fine. As did most if not all the IE running gear, this year I've fitted the hybrid with ST2 forks just so I can try out the steel carby bars.
Thanks for your comments guys. It's early days yet - just kicking the idea around at the moment, trying to identify the 'major' issues/pros/cons. Gillan - didn't know about the clip on angle - only ever sat on an IE once! My thought would be to keep my entire front end, as there's a bit of work in there and the bars (gsxr ones) are just perfect for me - they're a gnats lower than original, which my back can handle, but gives better clearance with the fairing. The big benefit is the bar element is closer to the fork leg, reducing the stretch a bit. WAH - thanks for comment re the tank - would have been one of my questions! Some of the sharper rake on an ie comes from a longer rear shock. The head angle in the frame maybe same as carb.
