1200 DVT Mcn Shootout!

  1. KTM GT on paper Looks dam good imo, what it actually is like to ride is another? and is it too tall for me? Still Over priced, but so is Multi.

  2. I rode all three when looking for a replacement for my 2010 mutly. In the end I bought another multy as it was by far the best one. The S1000XR is fun but no good on long trips and looks shit. The KTM has oodles of power but doesn't handle as well and my wide said she didn't like the look of the thing. The DVT handled really well, looks great and was good for long trips.

  3. The GT has a lower seat than the SDR and its narrower at the front which makes it easier to put both feet flat. If you're ok on a Multi a GT will be easy.
     
  4. Comparing one make of bike to another seems to me to be a fools errand, any conclusions have no meaning. I bought the dvt because I wanted a Ducati and I wanted a Multi. There is nothing about it that bothers me (since adding the Airhawk seat pad). I let the bike determine how I ride, and I'm 100% happy

  5. Can I ask, where did you ride the GT ! Because I could not get a demo on a GT anywhere.

I don't see your logic here, apart from "I want a Ducati" but if you are looking for a certain Style of Bike, and Ride, then to look at all the bikes available to suit your needs is the only option, Personally I do not buy a bike because of a name, I want the best bike that does the job for me, that ticks all my boxes of needs.
    I love my DVT for the most part, but I see the KTM GT seems to have those little extras that I want on my DVT, if the KTM for me rides as well and has more power low down, with the added options I want then it is very tempting.

    I certainly would not buy a brand if the bike was complete pile of unrelaible crap, (and no all my DUC's have been pretty dam good with very few minor problems, not like some)

  7. i have a DVT 1200s now but might trade with KTM as it does sound too good. Ktm's v twin always feels smoother then Ducati. And the facts are Ktm GT doesnt claim to be off road, got quick shifter, tyre pressure control and good torque. Believe or not Ducati 1200s isnt very easy to leave with, on high speed its can t be as good as a KTm gt because its far to high. if the ktm got good enough wind screen i would go for KTM. i used to have 1190 only reason i sell it was heat. now they sort it out i might go back. ducatis long travel suspension doesnt help anything in city or motorway. cornering isnt very stable too.
     
  8. Agree! the old horses for courses, if you take everything in context both are good bikes just different! I'm not overly keen on the XR looks and think Mutley looks better and has greater road presence but again everyone thinks different things are nicer. I preferred the overall feel of the Mutley over the XR hence why I bought it but I'm also sure there are many many happy XR owners that would say the same! Yes they all have their issues but if you do you research before purchasing you know potentially what you're buying into! I've had Jap in line fours (for the most bar a twin) for the best part of 30+ years so find the change refreshing! for now! Unless it turns out to be a dog!! :( I think (for me anyway) the 1200 dvt is all I would want or need in a bike! let's hope she not been a Friday afternoon build! :)

  9. My sentiments entirely. I would even go as far as saying that I would accept that the XR is a noticeably quicker machine in almost all areas, but that in itself doesn't make the Multi a bad bike either. I happily bought the Ducati after trying the XR knowing that the XR had a clear performance edge. Not only that buy a traded a Yamaha Tracer on which I did 10K miles in a year and which I recon could also give the Multi a hard time - it might be short of about 25bhp at the rear wheel, but it's got a clear 40Kg weight advantage and the engine is an absolute peach. That all said, I couldn't wait to get off the Tracer and onto the Ducati - for me the ride quality and comfort is in a different league already and so when I looked at the XR I couldn't help but focus on the things I really hated from previous bikes - and it was all about the vibes. I don't think the XR is a bad bike because it's not. I just couldn't live with it day-in-day-out and ride it tank-to-tank the way I need to. The reality is that the Multi does have as much performance and handling as anyone is ever likely to need on two wheel.

    My perception might also be skewed because I don't actually get my own performance/adrenaline hit from two wheels - which might be a struggle for some people here to comprehend. I actually get that fix from 4 wheels and from something which neither a Multi, XR or 99% of motorcycles could ever get close to - and before anyone starts roasting me for that, such cars do exist. Essentially I work the other way around to a lot of people with a bike and a car - my bike is for general use and my car comes out at the weekend. On that basis, the XR performance edge is almost irrelevant to me - but I would never say never and they might do something which makes me take a different view. Personally, I'm waiting for Yamaha to step up and do an MT-10 Tracer and I'd be firmly back in the Jap camp quicker than anything. Think R1 engine and electronics package in a Multi-esq chassis and you'll be on my wave-length, if you also happened to have taken a Tracer for a spin.

  10. Haven't got a GT but I've got an SDR which is the same chassis. The handling is superb. I had a suspension set-up to get the sag correct for me and the cornering and steering is sports bike sharp but not harsh. It'll stick with anything on the road but the seat (well the Powerparts comfort seat) is plush and roomy and the sports-tourer riding position suits me better than an upright. I've got lower back trouble and a moderate amount of weight on my arms is much more comfortable than being bolt upright.
    Can't comment on the wind protection because obviously the SDR hasn't got any but wind blast and noise is very modest for a naked and I imagine with a screen it would be excellent. The only adventure bike I've ridden that managed to eliminate the dreaded buffeting and wind noise that comes for having a screen on an upright bike was the 1200 GS. I think the Sports-tourer posture is much less prone to this. I may be wrong but I have a feeling KTM have revised the screen on the GT which is why its late appearing in showrooms.

  12. You see that makes perfect sense to me.

    I don't get out on the bike much, I'm in a car all week, and as nice as it is, cars are just cars to me

    But what i needed it to tick on the bike front was:

    Comfort for a tall bloke (6ft 3) - The XR has a taller seat and ride height, i felt too low slung on the DVT, far more than my previous 1200S Multi set up

    Sports bikes speed - I've always had them before moving to super nakeds, more recently the Tuono v4 and S1000r, therefore a quick shifter expectation was fairly natural and ultimately id like to have something i wouldn't get too frustrated with on track as the R1 is going too.

    Room for the Mrs if required - Possibly the reason the super nakeds didn't stay as long as id like was because the Mrs decided she'd like to spend more time with me and my hobby......yay

    Of course we know her thoughts on the DVT, it did surprise me though as she loved the 2012 multi....women

    Overall i wasn't initially sold on the looks, saying that i found the DVT a little fat looking compared to the older 'beaky' model.

    The XR can never be made to look pretty, thats a given.

    But get the silly pannier rigging and rack off, whack on a tail tidy, fit a high level exhaust, tinted screen and black radiator guards , its actually starts to look rather menacing.

    If it can't be pretty it has to be mean looking, thats my mantra :)

  18. I'm in agreement with this. It's pretty pointless having a big argument about which is best as they are all different, and thank goodness for that. One person's delight is another's disaster. I'm really glad that we have multiple manufacturers all pushing each other to produce better and better bikes, and that has to be a result for us all.

    If you want the BMW, get the BMW. If you want the Multi, get the Multi etc etc. If you want something that hasn't been built yet, you'll have to wait.

    Anyhow, I'm going to have fun in a few weeks as 4 of us are hearing up to the highlands on a GS, Multi DVT, XR and KTM SD GT. Much swapping and debating over beers will result, and I suspect each person will prefer their own bike. I must do a ride report on that one.
