Run into a wee problem as I was putting in the bearings for the layshaft. The left one is a 6003, the shaft, however (the shorter one above) did not fit as the hole for the 6003 is 17mm and the layshaft 20mm at this point. I was confused until I checked the original case, which actually takes a 6004 with the larger bore. So, as I am using ST2 cases (long story) for the rebuild, I had another layshaft I had bought recently with some random parts. I checked this (one on left) and it fits perfectly, so I have checked the length and it should fit. Its 2mm longer but the bearing is 2mm narrower so it sits in the same place....hopefully!

  6. I have measured my crank and case halves to work out shim sizes, I took several measurements as I was getting a variation in the jig I used, so I am hoping that I have a decent enough result. I have done some reading on this and some suggest a smaller preload of .1mm as opposed to the .15 or .2mm suggested in the Haynes. Baines racing advised me I just want a 'light drag' on the crank. I am gonna order the shims which are slightly different left and right to put the crank in the middle. The 900 SS gasket is not gonna fit the ST2 cases I am using so its gonna be Threebond. Once shims arrive I will put it all together and measure end float on crank, gears etc and probably have to adjust. Its exciting getting near to having cases together again. Its actually not as hard or daunting a job as I had feared when I first started. I thank all who have offered advice.

  7. :astonished:
Just be careful not to overshim the crank. Had an ST4 with less than 10k which knackered the main bearings due to it being about .02mm too tight. Motor was stripped by Rich at Louigi Moto and he was able to confirm that the engine has never been apart since it left the factory!

  8. Ok so I haven't done much of late, waiting on a couple shims coming and I have ordered some Loctite 641 which is a medium strength bearing retainer as one of the mains is dropping into the case too easily. The steel bearing housings are like £70+ each, I swapped it out for the one from the original cases which was a little better. I've been reading on other forums its quite common and using Loctite is a potential solution.

  9. I ended up getting some loctite bearing retainer for the two mains as I didnt want to chance them being too loose. Last shims on its way for gearbox output then cases back together, exciting!

  10. Been waiting on this 0.8mm washer for the gearbox output shaft behind the bearing. It was 1mm before. Now cases can go back together and measure everything again just to make sure. Hopefully thats it for the internals!

  12. Ok, firstly all endfloats looking good. Whats wrong here though? Is the roller not meant to be running on the selector drum? 1461957610792651966428.jpg

  13. Its ok, it appears this is not on the otiginal cases and must be specific to the ST

  14. Thanks for the offer Steve, I dont think it'll matter. The jockey wheel is just sitting redundant.

  18. Wow checking squish diy?.....you porting and polishing those internals too?

  19. It looks to me like its been done previous to my ownership Rich.

    Ok update 20160501_141237.jpg 20160501_195003.jpg 20160501_195006.jpg 20160507_203931.jpg
So I have measured squish and it appears over 1 mm by enough that I took the base gaskets off. I appreciate any advice on this. Will re measure when I have cleaned and painted the heads. The clutch side, as you can see, is done. The alternator cover needs blasted and painted. Head are gonna take a bit of time rebuilding, then engine in, back end on and hopefully shortly after running engine!

Btw thats not turd on the piston and heads, its silly putty.
