Hi need a quick answer please what is the recommended clutch stack height for a 749 I'm going to throw it in today and try it herd it's between 36.5 and 38 mm
Hope some one gets this soon I've built clutch up by putting old friction in first then steel then friction then dished with dot to outside and so on and so when I get to the end of the basket the stack seem to be very high with the last friction on the edge of the basket cut outs and the steel tea teeing on the edge of the basket so I took it back one steel and one friction will this work or will it slip
@mattyboy 38 Put the plates in the basket in the correct order. Measure the distance between the drum and the first plate. It should be 4 to 5 mm. Adjust to suit with different steels.
between 36.5mm & 38mm iirc I have seen info on it being 38mm +/- 2mm, but I've never been close to 40mm in my bikes I think the slipper measurement is closer to the 36.5mm range.
Is that 4 to 5 mil to the steal from the end of the basket inside the basket or overlap the outside of the basket
What's the number? Can't see due to rust! The tape measure doesn't appear to be flat against the steel.
I've checked and checked with a full stack it's about 3 mil with the last plate and steel taken out is about 7 mill
How ever Rick I've done the quite clutch mod by replacing the first steel with an old 2 mm friction plate
Oh...dunno then! I only know what it should be for the standard set-up...I have no experience with the quiet clutch mod and how that is meant to work and what sort of gap is required. Sorry!
Will do plan is to set at 38 go out to my mates ten miles away with spare plates in pocket and see how it does will taking my last steel and last friction out be detrimental
I set my 999 to 38mm with quite clutch and its been fine. Buy this: Look at this on eBay 6" 150mm Digital Vernier Caliper Electronic Micrometer LCD Measuring Gauge Tool | eBay
There is a lot of folklore attached to 'stack height' etc on our dry clutches. If you bear in mind that the whole operation only moves the pressure plate by around 2 mm for full disengagement, then as long as you have approximately this much or preferably a bit more to the first plate, then you will be fine. After you assemble it all up, pull in the clutch, and watch to make sure that the first plate visible has no chance of popping off the end of the drum.
