So I've started the bike this morning ready for a 5 day trip to France, and for some reason my left rear indicator is lit...! Not flashing, but solidly lit when the ignition is on?! The indicator switch has NO effect and won't stop it illuminating or make it flash. The right indicators work fine, as does the front left indicator. Called my local reputable dealer first thing who were unable to suggest a cause having not come across it before. Bike is a late 2013 model 1199S with 17k miles. Can anyone suggest a cause or fix? I've bought tools with me on the trip and have a place this evening to fettle with it. Sam
There is a well-known issue with the indicators on the 1199 which was fixed with a recall. I'm amazed your dealer didn't know about this? Has your bike had all its recalls done? Unfortunately to fix it there is part required which is a small wiring loom. I'll get the part number for you incase this is the problem. It cost me about £10 and 20 minutes to fit. I could have had it done for free (being a recall item) but there was an 8-week wait for a space at the dealer to fit it.
Thanks, I've already had this recall done some time back. The dealer did mention that as the first port of call. That issue was more to do with them physically not working I believe. Mine's getting power sent to it for some reason, and makes no sense to me?!
It sounds remarkably similar though. This is exactly what mine was doing, the left indicator would come on and wouldn't go off again until I switched the bike off. The recall part is specifically for the left-hand indicator too. But if the loom has been fitted then I guess that can't be it...
Oh really? That's interesting. I wonder if there's some issue to do with that then. Is there a recall for the recall yet? [emoji23] Is the new loom that's fitted as part of the recall easy to get to and obvious to check that it's definitely there?
Its' underneath the left hand cowl behind your front fairing, basically directly underneath your left clip-on. I'm guessing if you take that out and look for a part that looks like as below you know it is there. The small black box should be stuck on. I'd take a picture of it on my 1199, but I don't have the bike anymore unfortunately.
Oh and I didn't fully read your initial post stating it was only the rear indicator, mine affected both front and rear indicators on the left side. Mine would also only act this way when the bike was warm. If I turned the bike off and back on again straight away it would come back, but once cooled down it would work ok. So not exactly the same issue you're describing and I'm guessing it must be something different if it's only the left rear. Good luck sorting it though...
I'm no expert on electrickery but in my limited experience, such issues are often down to dodgy earthing
Mine did that the other weekend. It started by not working when indicating right then the left did what you described. I did a quick check inside the LHS switch gear to see if there was a obvious fault but I could not see anything. Gave it a spray of WD40 and its been fine ever since
Thanks for all the replies guys. It's now intermittently working normally, and when it's playing up I can 'manipulate' it's behaviour by toggling the indicator switch, and sometimes make it flash. Looks like the fault is pointed towards the switchgear so I'll be taking that apart this evening to have a look and give it a clean
Fixed now! The problem was the switch. I took apart the housing, sprayed WD-40 in there and blasted it dry with an air gun. All appears to be working as it should now Thanks for all the help and advice [emoji106] Sam
How did you come up with an air gun while away in France. Good stuff. Enjoy the rest of your trip. I had no idea there was a Sam1199s on here till recently but see you've been on a while. Looking forward to meeting you at Donnington.
I managed to squeeze a compressor in the panniers [emoji23] Ha! I'm staying in one place for the 4 nights in here, at a friend-of-a-friends B&B, and he happens to have a huge workshop with plenty of tools [emoji106] Yeah our usernames are easily confused! What bike / colour are you riding? Come and find me at Donny - you won't miss me - mine's blue! Would definitely be good to meet Sam
my 199 had same issue last Nov, but the loom as pictured above was the culprit ! Enjoy the break, we want to see pics !!
