I agree they have bottomed, I sold an earlier 999S in 2014 for £4700 with 7000 miles an full Ducati Service history. It took a while to sell. Not sure what you would pay now, mainly watch the R's as I have a couple
Sold my 999R 5 years ago and P/E it for a steaming pile of Honda horse manure. Got £9500 for it and probably worth £15000 now. Deep regret.
Hello Lester, I'm really blown away to have seen your post, as it happens , I'm the guy who was lucky enough to have bought your bike. The day I walked into the Honda shop in North London to see what I'd put a deposit on over the phone,I couldn't believe what a Ferrari was doing parked surrounded by civics !!..Seriously ..it's a gorgeous machine, that's been very pampered, and has now just over 6000 miles on the clock. Some time ago I tried to contact you in case the bike had a plaque to go with it.In any case I'd love to chat or email or whatever .Hope all is good with you,and delighted to see you on the forum.
Bought my base facelift from ebay late 2007, just after 1098 came out. 4000 miles, with termi half system, hugger, dp 'D16' seat, pretty clutch and some carbon. All original parts included. I bid the opening bid, £5,500 with about an hour to go and went out. No other bids. Rode it home from Wales a few days later with biggest smile ever. Still smiling.
I never thought of that... I had a full Leo Vince system on mine and a shed load of carbon too.... :fearful:... but then I always do that, buy a bike, spend a fortune on it, get bored (not in the 999s case though.. had to grow up and get a mortgage)... and sell it on so someone gets a proper sorted bike for a bargain...
1199 - and it's going nowhere ... but this one if I sell I would take the exhaust and bits off cos they're so fecking expensive
Amazing. I suspect the plaque was lost when we moved house but I will have a hunt. Are you medical? I work at the RNOH Stanmore. I am getting to grips with my Monster 1200R which is ergonomically a bit easier at my age. Currently enjoying my KTM 990Adv in SW France. One thing that amazed me about the 999R was the compliance of the suspension. Out of the box it was the most comfortable ride of any bike. BW Lester
The only medical connection is that I need plenty of medication at my age !!!...The Dr John bit is because your 999r is bed mate to a Dr John Daytona Guzzi(number3 of just 20 made).Im off to France and Spain myself in 2weeks,but on an old 98 1100gs with 85k miles and ohlins...now that is compliance!!!!!!...Hope you're having a fantastic time in France and in the off chance you should find the plaque you can email me at. [email protected] John
I have been riding a 748 for the last 8 years and have to agree with the armchair thing, my 999 is a much easier bike to ride but IMHO lacks the precise focus of the 916/748 chassis. The 999 is better for distance riding, is substantially more forgiving, is a better daily ride and is deceptively fast. My first impressions were "where has the raw Ducati" heart gone which is a reflection of the sanitised engine that the testastretta is compared to the desmoquattro, it perhaps indicates what I want from a Ducati and some years ago Rich Llewellyn gently warned me off a 998 for the same reasons. However putting a few miles on the 999 over the last two months and it is growing on me. Bought it (a base 03 model with 6700 on the clock) for £3,900 last Oct/Nov, it still needs a proper map and set up which will make it significantly better in many ways. Lovely bike it is, but I still prefer the man and machine thing and the greater precision, feel and feedback of the 748. Perhaps the greater input and engagement required to drive the 748 properly is exactly why many people prefer the 749/999? Having said all that it is currently the bike of choice for my 17 mile rural commute each morning and it's overtaking and pick up blows the 748 into the weeds. With the engine the way it is I think I can understand why the R models are so sort after and suspect that is the 999 I was hoping for.
My base 999 has a decatted straight through exhaust and pc3, that I know of. I'm not sure what else has been done but it came with a dyno readout showing 128 rwbhp The motor is awesome with no flat spots and incredibly precise fuelling. An R1 twist grip is a popular mod, which gives usefully but not amazingly more throttle fo your twist. Another traditional mod is to swap the 190 for a 180 for more precise handling.
The 749 comes fitted with the 180, it is honestly the best bike I have owned yet for handling. I can change direction easily mid corner, I can use a lot of front brake mid corner before it feels unstable. Never been able to do that on a standard Jap bike.
these bikes live for country roads give it the respect and put the effort in when ridding your confidence in the bike just gets more and more and the pleasure is the grin you will have . i have some cracking country roads on my doorstep will never go the short way anywhere when on one of thses always the back roads . there is just something about them when it hooks up on a twisty road you can do the same on a jap bike maybe faster and easy but there is just something about one of these which makes you just want more and you just dont feel it on any other make . just dont tell anybody
I have a 999 engine ready to go into my black 06 749 but i'm thinking while i'm at it to go with the 1038 kit. I'll never sell the bike so don't mind throwing money at it, and the reviews are favourable.
