899 Brands Noise Testing

  1. Fair enough, ride safe. The only thing is, it's a lot of cost and expense to be going to these trackdays to scrape through or not. And 105.8db is really pushing it bearing in mind it's a logarithmic scale.

Have a good day on track :) perhaps the tongue lashing that no limits gave MSV yesterday helped? Or that Ducati were going to give them....

  2. Fingers crossed!!

  3. All was good. No issues with noise levels or being black flagged (as expected), so it seems that Cadwell is still a viable option on the 1199/1299 even with modified exhausts. Just spend some time warming it up, get it nice and hot then literally lay the bike about 45 degrees while you do the static test. That's what I did to get it through.

Apart from the snow/hail in the afternoon it was a lovely, mostly dry day but bloody cold!

  4. my lab has proper calibrated sound meters. I wonder what cheap crap they use for this measurement, and what proper training they have had? Do anything of them having any calibration information for their meters? Or is it a case of "the meter says no" nonsense?

  5. Meter says no! Raspberry! I'm afraid. The guy does have it kept safe in a nice carry case. Like sound based hit man!!

  6. just passed the noise test at snetterton on my 899 with termi's, baffles in at 102db.

  7. Only just spotted this, didn't see it before for some reason. As Bradders says no noise limits in Spain, they say 105db or whatever but I've never seen anything tested.

Regarding the BMW, they have a flapper valve like the stock Panigale exhaust which only opens above ~5500rpm or similar. Once it opens the bike is pretty damn loud actually, but I really hope I dont have problems as part of my man maths for buying it was so I could get onto Brands and other UK tracks with low noise limits!

  8. On my last track day there was a guy with a new s1000 and had an Akra can on it. Passed the static easily but they did ask him to do a retest a few sessions later as it was setting off the ride by sensors..

It passed the static again and they let him back out.

  9. My 2013 Multi failed the noise test at Snetterton today. Measured at 104db on standard cans.

  10. Had you bypassed the flapper valve in the exhaust?

  11. No. Bike is completely standard.

  12. Hmm. Interesting. I'll be tracking mine at some point (2010) and assumed it would be well under 102.

  13. As you are UK road legal, the tester has got it wrong. This is the root of the issue with the Panigale, totally UK street legal and EU homologated hence the new stance taken by MSV of not turning away bikes with the stock can. I'd ask for my money back. Andy

  14. The difficulty is that it's MSV's right to do whatever they want with regards to noise, road legal or not. My termi pipes with baffles are uk road legal and yet for Cadwell MSV told me that unless I can pass static they will turn me away. No leniency given

  15. While this is a brilliant thread, there's so much conflicting info.

If I were to rock up to snetterton with my 899 with termi's, I have no idea if I'll pass the noise test. We have one person saying his with baffles in has just passed at 102db, we have someone else saying their 899 with baffles blew 105db, now there's someone with a bog standard multistrada who failed at 104db!?

Do the track day organisers at MSV circuits each have their own noise testers or is it MSV employees at all of them?

  16. My advice would be (I may have already said this) if you fail on a standard can kick up a fuss in race control.

A lot seems to depend on who you get doing the noise testing but take it above them.

  17. The guy at snetterton isn't looking to fail you where as the guy at brands sounds like a complete arse hole. If your going to snetterton make sure the bikes warm. Lean it over as far as you can. He asks for 5k rpm. Hold it just under. Worse case scenario is your slightly over 102. He'll ask you to come back a bit later and pass you because he knows you wont fail the drive by which is the important one. Like I said though I passed at 102. I thought all msv days were clamping down but after speaking to a few people it just sounds like it's brands.

  18. Being road legal doesn't necessarily mean they will allow you on track. Sadly tracks have to adhere to their own planning rules agreed with the council and not the DVLA or whoever.

I suspect the Multi makes a lot of mechanical noise as there is no fairing to shield the noise from the tester.

  19. Interesting. Thanks for the info. Gives me a bit more confidence now.

  20. Just done a track day at Brands. 1098s termi slip ons, no baffles - blew 102db exactly. Had the baffles with me as I fully expected to need them and was surprised that I didn't. The noise tester seemed like a reasonable chap - the bloke in front of me was struggling with an Aprilia and he let that through at 102.6db. He wouldn't say where the drive by monitors were located but recommended him not to use the last 1500 revs!
