Hi everyone, I have a number of bikes and the wife is making me sell my best loved Ducati 916SP, I now live up a 1 mile stretch of off road track and its totally impractical for the old girl! My 916sp has a bit of history, which is why it makes it difficult to value. It was the first one delivered to the UK, some 3-4 months before the next bike. I actually ordered from Hoss Elm at Moto Cinnelli about a year before it was announced and the 888 was still current. I sent him a £2k deposit and told him that I wanted the first SP version of what ever came after the 888. He took the money but assured me at the time that Ducati would only be making a Strada, which I declined and insisted that I wanted an SP. Then about a year later I had a call from Hoss who told me my bike was sitting outside his HQ surrounded by Photographers - as the 916 had not been announced as such, I was very excited! I drove straight to his office and let Sean Emmit ride the bike back to Swindon (after loads of action pics). As the first (and only 916 at the time), it was featured extensively in many Mags. The bike was hand built and has a few non standard bits from the more production bike. Its been standing for a couple of years and although generally good has a broken brake lever and a small crack on the fairing (wife dropped something on it). So how do I value this bike to (reluctantly) sell her? If I take it to a bike shop - I am pretty certain history won't count for much!! Any advice gratefully received!
Sounds like you have a small piece of history there! Do you have any copies of the mags to prove its history? Anything that can prove its "provenance " as they like to say on Antiques Roadshow, is vital if you're asking more than the norm. I'd also suggest getting the broken bits fixed as any prospective buyer will try and knock a load off your asking price. Hope this is some help. Chris
Got run in gently then, mostly on the back wheel! Best not to disclose the Fast Bikes stuff to any potential buyers... Any old mags showing the reg number etc?
First 916sp Hi Chris, thanks for your reply, yes somewhere I have some photo's and probably correspondence from Hoss at Moto Cinelli. I can probably get hold of the back copies if all else fails. I guess I was just wondering if the first bike was worth any more than the 10th or 1000th! I will certainly get the fairing fixed as its only a little break and the rest is fine. She is just such a great bike to ride and failing a sale, I am going to ride her down to Tuscany and play with her on the windy mountain passes!
Back Wheel Luckily I was present at the photo shoots and wouldn't let anything wild happen to the old girl - so there was no back wheel stuff, until I ran her in and absolutely no burn outs etc - Ever! I actually drove the car behind Emmit all the way home to make sure he did it properly - although we did get a great pic around a round about near Oxford. Scraping a knee around a R.O.B. is not a life threatening engine issue - but take your point! The problem now is keeping her off the back wheel as having lost 3 stone I can't keep the front end down!!
I may well be interested in buying your bike. could you give me a call on 01364 631119 or 07971 497615. Many thanks Paul
i don't think that it worth more then the 10th or 15th SP that came to engeland. if had a plaque on the yoke,(wich i don't think that the first SP's had)with #001. then i think it was another story,if you had the first one made, and had the plaque to prove this. if the bike means that much to you why do you not just keep it and sell some other bike. that is what i would do if i had an early SP. henk!!!
