  1. My other SS needs new tyres. My ie rides 180 and my SS rides 170s. What do you prefer for the carby? Thinking of sticking with 170.

  2. Rich, IMHO run with the standard 170, 180 gives clearance issues and turns in a little slower. Its a light narrow nimble bike so keep with the thinner standard tyre.

  3. Always stuck with 170 in the past as that was original on my 92 SS. Have changed to 180 just recently, choice was very limited in 170 as wanted something sporty as planning to do a track day. Mine has 5.5 wheel, fitted Metzeler M7RR sportecs front and rear, had to buy carbon hugger to clear rear, turn in is as quick if not quicker than before, M7 profile is quite pointy though when i compare it to Angel GT's on my VFR12. No change in stability and combined with Ohlins rear fitted couple of months back it ride and handles brilliantly for me. Haven't changed anything in geometry.

  4. If we are talking about a 900SS, the stock size is 170/60....wheel size 5.50"
    The 750SS is 160/60.....wheel size 4.50"
But.....at one stage I needed another rear tyre and only had a relatively new 185/55 on 4.50" wheel which I had acquired......

I cut a cardboard profile of the worn 160/60 and checked it against the 185/55 and they were more or less identical....in fact the 185/55 gave more useable tread without the sudden stop where tread met sidewall on the 160/60.

Having fitted it to the bike, there were no issues with fouling the swingarm or anything like that.........I did about 1000miles on that tyre then gave it to Paul563 who ran it on his 750SS for several more thousand miles.

It may be that Fire3500 is still running it because he bought Paul's bike.

  5. Here's the tech spec from my 92 900 handbook. I'm running 120-70 and 180-55 Pirelki Diabolo II with no fouling or rubbing issues.

  6. I run an Avon Storm 180 rear, which cut an arc into the original rear hugger. It was that way when I bought the bike but I didn't realise until after changing the tyre for a new one of the same. Had to buy a carbon rear hugger to provide the extra clearance clarence.

  7. My carby's carbon hugger does not clear the Bridgestone BT16 Pro 180 on my IE. I pushed it against the wheel and it touched on both sides. Not all 180s are the same though.....

  8. I've stuck to a 170 rear. I've done a couple of trackdays on my old carby with Diablo Rosso 2 rear and a Diablo Rosso Corsa front. I'd hazard that unless you circulate at the pointy end of the fast group, you'd be OK ;)

I know a trackday instructor who had used Pirelli Angels with no problems :)

  9. Come to think of it, My mate's Superlight has them and it behaved impeccably round Pembrey a few times.

  10. I can really recommend the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT, the 180 has no clearance probs with the carbon hugger...and the tire is great in the twisties.

  11. 180/60 for me on track and road as the profile helps with cornering..... alegedly. ...

Thinking 180 is the right size for a 5.5 rim anyhow.

  12. If it matters, I run 120/70 front and 160/60 rear on my 750. Supercorsa seem to be the best tyre I've run on the SS

  13. Do Supercorsas last?

  14. I find they last a few hundred miles. Not anywhere near as long as a proper road tyre, but for the way they ride it's worth it in my opinion

  15. My SS being an US spec 900 runs a 4.5in rim on the rear so I run a 160, tyre of choice is Bridgestone 020 at present with no issues.

  16. Worth trying for a few hundred awesomely sticky miles

  17. This was fresh on a few weeks ago. Probably done 300ish on it. Sticks like glue! [IMG]

  18. 1/2" chicken strip......losing your touch........

Tyre size for a 750 should be a 160 BTW.............4.5" wheel that is.

  19. Nope, when I got the bike it urgently needed a mini resto / recommission and so I put a matched pair of Pirelli Corsa Rosso on it. The difference was incredible with amazingly smooth turn-in and total confidence. The comparison between that set-up and the Dunlop Sportmax on my own SS is night and day. I've been running with Bridgestone Battlax BT016Pro recently on everything (749, Blade, GSX-R) and I find them a good tyre with many deals available. The Pirellis are ace but the Battlax is a pragmatic alternative. TBH if a rider's on-road performance is exceeding the capabilities of the BT016Pro then I'd like to follow them as I'll probably learn a thing or two... ;)

  20. I have the BT016Pro on my bike too. I have the 1100 motor and run 180 at the rear. Never stepped out on me unless on wet white lines. Probably more than enough for our bikes.
