939 SP Sluggish Starting

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by Daddy2coull, Jun 7, 2016.

  1. I've noticed my 939 has an extremely slow start and often fails to fire as its turning so slowly. Now I've owned an 848 and that had a super fast start up and barked into life. The 939 feels like you're trying to wake a teenage boy at midday

  2. I wonder if @Exige has done replacement starter cables for the 939.

Is now a good time to say (again) how delighted I am with my formally sluggishly-starting 999S? Jumps into life with little or no fuss these days, thanks to the Exact-start cables.

  3. Shouldn't really need them on a new bike though. It's almost at the point I want to try bump starting her. And I'm much too old and large for that lol

  4. I cannot speak for your bike as I don't know HMs particularly well but Ducatis in general are well known (on this forum at least) for having inadequate cabling for their starting circuits.
Big twin-cylinder engines required decent voltage to turn the lump over from cold and decent current to provide both turn-over and a fat spark. In fact, you are well-advised to get a decent starter circuit kit in place on a new bike so that your starter motor isn't unnecessarily stressed from the word go.

I'd say it is just my opinion but I know plenty of other folks here share it :)

  5. You might be surprised, it depends on what bits of tin they have cobbled together :)
You need to explore all other possibilities of course but if a current kit doesn't fit it would be interesting to see if we can measure up and design a suitable kit (foc for your help of course) and see if it makes a difference. Has it been the same from new and how old is it?
Most likely would be a cell down on your battery I guess, reducing the cranking amps. Or simply a bad / loose Earth.

  6. It's about two weeks old. Covered roughly 350 miles. I'm pulling it apart next week to fit a full termi system so if you need any pictures or measurements I'll do my best to help.

  7. Your first port of call should be the dealer, we can measure up in parallel of course, I just need cable lengths and photos of the battery, solenoid and starter connections.
It would be interesting to see what they do and say!
Could be a mapping issue if the bike is set to pass euro 6 regulations I guess, but a new bike not starting needs fixing by the supplying dealer even if we can make it better with proper cables, it should at least start!

  8. I've no doubt my dealer will do their best to sort it. They've never let me down in the past. This isn't a rant by any means, more curiosity. I am very interest in a set of your leads though

  9. And I am interested in any improvement they might make once the dealer deems it 'normal' :)
As you intimated, the greatest improvement is usually seen on bike 5 years or older with massive differences around 10. But as an improvement to prevent undue wear on the starter and battery they are beneficial from the start.

  10. My 821 starts ok. Can't imagine the cables will be any different on the 939.

Check the battery terminals are not loose.

  11. Already said :)

  12. I'd say if exige is offering a free set for a bit of help then take them...!

  13. I have a two month old 939 and its exactly the same. However i also have terrible fueling and i am told that it is all to do with the Euro 4 emissions. Bike is going to DWR Racing next week to be re-mapped which i hope will resolve both issues. I will keep you posted

  14. I'm fitting a full system next week with the up map. I'll post any changes here

  15. Isn't the 821 euro 4 compliant also?

  16. I mentioned Euro 6 above, are we not on euro 6 now? :)

  17. The nuke was very helpful :)

So bikes are Euro 5 and cars Euro 6 for some reason?

  18. To avoid confusion I looked on the Ducati website. The 939 is euro 4

  19. I've got an 821 and actually noticed something this week. If I start the bike for the first ride of the day it can be a second or 2 now ( it did just fire up like lightning ) then I when i stop for petrol, the engine isn't off for long obviously it takes a bit longer and some times required a couple presses of the ignition, could this be the battery starting to run a little flat??

  20. Or maybe the engine is up to temp and the compression is higher
