900 Ss Ie Tyres?

  1. Hi there fellow SS admirers.
Iv'e just got hold of an SS IE, and it's shod with some very old rubber, to which I wonder what your recommendations are for a new set would be ?
    Sizes are 180/55/17 X 120/70/ 17.
I also have an ST2 which is shod with Conti Attacks, and to be honest I don't think that they aren't that bad at all.
BTW these tyres are not for commuting just pleasure, so longevity doesn't come into it at all.
    Thanks.

  2. Nice to see you back here Mark.........

...........I think the rear tyre for a 900SS IE should be a 170 according to an IE owner's handbook.

  3. I have the late IE with Marchesini rims. I had a go on my mate's Fireblade which comes standard with BTX016 Pro (must have the Pro on the end or you get an older cheaper less sticky version). They were very sticky and stable and good for 3000 - 5000 miles. So I got some. Not that cheap but not silly money either.

The bike had a cheaper BTX on when I bought it, more of a touring one and in the wet it slipped at gentle speeds on white lines and those rubber seams you get.

I use the same size tyre as what is currently on your bike. With the IE's superior power and handling, you're more likely to push your tyre than you would on your carby. So a 180 is a good choice in my opinion. It may also be true that the late IE with Marchesini rims came with a 180, the rims might even be wider. Looking for evidence here, though. Evidence on the tyre size, not the superiority......

  4. Have just put set of Metzeler Sportec M7RR on my carby with 180 rear. Done about 500 on them and can't fault them. Quick turn in, stable and comfortable. Was a bit concerned about going to 180 rear from 170 and steering slowiing down but they're quite pointy profile and steers quicker than on 170 rear and still stable when you hit a bump cranked over. Would recommend.

  6. The bike came with the tyres already fitted, along with the standard hugger.

  8. Hi,
Sorry for delay in replying, been sunning myself in Corfu! Needed to fit a carbon hugger to get the clearance, it nearly cleared the original one, just slight rub on part of the tyre on the chain side. Hugger, both original and Carbon King one I replaced it with are tighter to the tyre on the chain side. Another make 180 may fit straight on as not all 180's are "180" !!
