I'm definitely going to pay the finance off first. Question is, what on earth would I price it up as if selling as is? I know a 2010 S Touring with all luggage is about £7k. Initial instinct is £4-5k with the undiagnosed engine noise?!? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'll join you on the KTM forum Gimlet, already found you in a post. Just trawling the forums to see the problems. List is a lot shorter than here and doesn't include engines shitting themselves at low mileage. The KTM forum list of problems seems to mostly include: 1. how do I wipe this grin off my face. 2. I needed to grease my head bearings. 3. It wheelies so much I keep having a reoccurring problem (see fault 1). 4. Water in swing arm, simply drill 2 holes. 5. Clock connector vibrates loose, glue for permanent fix. None of those actual faults even compare to the multi. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm looking at the 990 LC8 engine KTM. Awesome engine and servicing and reliability are fine. I had one before the Ducati and it never went wrong. Only got the faultistrada as the KTM got stolen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
All brands have problems. A mate of mine has had three KTM's. He's now got a standing invitation to the AA's Christmas party.
If you still have the old oil filter then cut it open and see what's trapped in there, if it's white metal that is not magnetic then it's probably bearing material. Hope that you get it sorted cheaply then trade the fecker in. I'm still considering the MT-10 after a hoon on one.
Only a few little bits of the usual metal on the magnet. Filter is in the bin but I can dig that out tomorrow morning. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Are you sure the previous rebuild is not covered by some sort of warranty? If it is, I'd get it sorted then get rid before the next problem crops up.
Well it's been about 14000 miles since the rebuild P&H did. Probably just over a year. I know they'll argue that they didn't do the last oil service but with it being out of warranty I had no qualms about doing the oil and filter change myself. They're not hard after all. Id probably say go for an SMR instead of a SMT....R's are rare as and look way better.... I think as others have said - you just get the odd one....in fact going the other way I fully expected to be engine rebuild territory with my rsv4 but its been faultless (4th time at the TT this year) and ive got one of the worst ones ever....mines the pre aprc where they were so bad Aprilia had engines lined up at dealers waiting for the blown motors to come in and swap them out... It doesn't leak oil never fails to start, starts on the button and goes like fuck....having said that I look after it as I do all my bikes....anything that crops up gets done immediately. Going back to yours.....yes its got engine problems but as you say the choice of mechanic could be a big one in a good way....choose the right guy and it might/probably would be reliable for years to come...and - to make it cheaper consider taking the engine out yourself (if youre skilled enough to do so) that would save quite a bit....
I had the 990 SMR, best bike ever. Thing is, since having the faultistrada, the wife likes it ON the back and we do use the panniers/top box. I had a top box on the SMR and it was awesome, I would rock up to brands take off the top box and do a trackday on it. Regarding taking the engine out myself, I do bits on bikes and cars and am not mechanically inept. Taking an engine out is something I've not done though. I do copiers by trade so I'm sure I could follow a manual. As per a previous comment, selling as is would be a tempting choice. Going to call the finance company tomorrow and get the early settlement figure. Then it will be a case of working out if the cost of the repair is more than the money I'd lose selling it as is. What would you guys say would be a rough ball park for a 2010 Touring S with all luggage and the ohlins mechatronic, 21,000 miles? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Engine removal isn't that bad, you just need space to lay everything out as it were.....but having said that - if youre pissed off with the thing then its not enjoyable, just a chore.... I had my 525 supermoto down to the component parts in about 3 hours, read no instructions didn't separate anything and once it was all cleaned up took about the same amount of time to get it back together (the main parts) - hardest part was reassembling the airbox assembly as it slotted over the rear subframe.... Sounds like you've made your mind up (which is totally understandable).
Well, on the plus side the ground up rebuild of my KTM didn't yield any problems....theyre probably the cheapest company in spares costs that ive ever come across and if its not in fowlers in Bristol it will be in 3 days (the maximum time anything took to turn up) on a 10 year old exc I was impressed to say the least and more to the point while the engine was down to the crankcases they were still upgrading internal engine parts to make it more reliable...brilliant...
Settlement figure is £6466. Just explaining to the missus that this could cost thousands in repair costs. I think she's got it in her head it will be £500 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Get rid of it ....its cursed , Ktm 990 Smr or smt both good bikes good back lane scratchers , I'd say multi better 2 up though , what about 1190 adventure sort of inbetween the 990 and a multi , I've had 1190 r great fun on the road ... the non r bit more road biased . You could get another multi and it be no trouble at all , I have heard a lot more Multistrada engine faults like rumbling and knocking cranks than issues with the Ktm lump ... like I said luck of the draw ....... anyhow ....what goodies you got for sale ?? Hehe
Got the mechatronic ECU, can put the original ECU back on as both are perfect. Got a navihalter type satnav mount & Aztec spacers. Got winglets too but each has a hole drilled for aux lighting. Don't want to go 1190 because I trust the 990 engine. I've not seen a 2nd hand single spark engine. Would probably be £1500 anyway. I'm wondering if I'll get £5000 for my bike as is. That's £2.5k cheaper than most out there and means I wouldn't have to spend the time repairing it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I've got a 1098 SF and an LC8 990 KTM and an RC8 1290 KTM. Trust me, servicing costs on the KTMs are a hell of a lot less than the Ducati. The 990 has a short 4500 mile service interval but its so simple to work on, its quick and cheap. The LC8s are also very DIY friendly. As Comfy says KTM parts are not price. They're about half the price of Ducati parts and I've never had an trouble getting hold of anything. JH, if you go for an SMT and the Missus likes to go on the back, go for a later one that has a preload adjuster fitted on the rear shock. They're quite sensitive to suspension settings and adding rear preload without the adjuster is a pain. Or just get a 1290 SDR and frighten litre sports bike riders.
