1200 I Give Up! Hello Ktm My Dear Old Friend.

  1. I know this situation has been far from ideal, however when the heads went on my bike about a month after the extended 3 year warranty had run out they persuaded Ducati to pay for all of the claim as I'd always serviced my bike with them.

  2. I doubt they will even notice firebladeboy, All the time they keep selling bikes and clothing, and have a full workshop, they can afford to drop a few problematic customers.
what might make them listen is if it made it to mcn or one of the magazines as to how unsupportive they are beyond warranty (and sometimes in warranty too).

  3. Probably quite easy to get Ducati to agree to the heads though. Known problem that involved a recall. This is a bit different however, they've already lost money with me the labour for doing my heads, radiator and full service. Now the bearing has gone, there's probably no guarantee of them getting Ducati to pay for it so are probably thinking they don't want to lift a finger.

  4. Twin4me, my 2010 was only touched by them, made no difference.
Sales and parts guys are great, and the mechanic cleary knows his stuff, but the service support guys have zero flexibility. They used to have a decent service guy called will. At least he would try to help. Shame he left really.

  5. First time I spoke to one of their sales guys was when I was buying the bike. Found him awful! He'd ask a question, but then switch off completely and not even hear the response. Quite rude.

Saw him in there a while later and had a good old chat and he was very different. Must have been an off day initially.

  6. It's not unreasonable for the dealer to not want to cover the cost of the repair. They should however be supporting your claim to ducatI, because they did after all carry out the previous repair in accordance with their instructions.
P&h simply don't seem to want to fight the corner of the customer, it's more like they want to keep ducati sweet instead.

I wonder who the rude sales guy was :)

  7. Regardless of the dealer, the experience u are having is bad form. The finance company is now your best bet as they will not want to offer their finance on a manufacturers product that proves to be faulty.

I will however say that there are a number of dealers with very similar issues at the mo which worries me. One slags customers on Facebook and Twitter feeds from time to time and the other I go to sometimes struggles to say hello to you, but I bought from P&H and had the best experience I have ever had buying a bike, truly exceptional.

I would say try to get the finance company to get Ducati to make the decision on it rather than a dealer who is fighting with little to no clout.

Sorry, hope that comes out in support of your issue. Just saying that I'm sensing that main dealers are just being forced by lack of margin and tight timescales into positions they rightly would never want to be in.

Ps.. I do kinda feel like if I was the mechanic I would have given the crank and piston a move when the head was off to check for end float on the crank.... Having said that, did u see Yamaha gave dealers something like 3-5 hours for the warranty job to replace R1 gearboxes, and in anyone's book that's bloody tight!!!

  8. The buying part is never a true reflection of a dealers customer service, dealing with the inevitable problems afterwards, is..

  9. And I wouldn't have been naive enough to assume it was, was merely countering some comments in earlier post about a pre sales call where they were apparently unhelpful.

Anyway, I still think the finance company is the best weapon here, the dealer has little power.

  10. Yyyyyeah...I'm not entirely buying the "woe is the dealer" line. They could offer to do the labour on this job at cost, instead of including their profit margin...at least that would should some good faith and customer support. Clearly, they f*cked up in not checking the big ends when the top end went. I mean who strips an engine to that degree and doesn't check for any other potential issues when they're at it?

  11. This is my point. If I were offered parts from Ducati FOC, and given some leeway on labour, then I would proceed. Being told, £4K plus would leave me approximately £3k out of pocket if I sold the bike afterwards.

If they helped me out and did the work for £1k, I'd break even and be happy enough with that.

  12. Exactly, not to mention the trouble selling it, I personally wouldn't touch a bike that's had 2 engine rebuilds in 21k miles, as there are others out there. So it leaves u in a turd position.

  13. A new or replacement engine would take care of that of course. Perhaps one given, and fitted, at cost. Pie in teh sky I know....

  14. I'd be very surprised if an entire replacement engine is available even if Ducati were willing to donate one. I doubt they make spare engines. They'll make all the spares parts of course but I expect fully assembled engines are all allocated to the bikes in each production run.

  15. Ps.. I do kinda feel like if I was the mechanic i would have given the crank and pistons a move when the head was off to check for end float on the crank....

    Hypothetical question ......
What if you were the mechcanic and you did Check the crank for end float and rough bearings and at that time everything was ok and in spec ,would you split the cases and do big ends and mains anyhow

  16. And yeah, maybe in that situation, its not the mechanics fault. But I'll tell you whose fault it's DEFINITELY not, and that's JH, who's getting royally screwed here by what is clearly a lemon bike.

  17. If I was the dealer who had sold the bike in the first place and I was doing a top-end rebuild under warranty I'd want to be absolutely certain for the sake of my reputation and my profits that this bike wouldn't be coming back a third time.

  18. The manager's words upon selling me the bike were, we don't sell boomerangs.

  19. So what is the state of play now John have you had any success?

  20. Dealer has just given me the service history for me to give to be finance company. It will probably be another month until I know.

The wife and I just walked into a BMW dealership to look at the XR. Very nice bike. Dealer said they are selling so well they're having stock trouble.
