749 Another Termi Question.

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Red Duck, Jul 3, 2016.

  1. Hi.
I've just bought a 54mm full Termignoni system for my 2004 749r from flea bay.
Apparently it came off a 2005 deep sump, black swingarm 749 so I hoped it would fit.
However on trying to fit it today the sump appears to be in the way!
So my question is: are all deep sumps the same and how does the deep sump system differ? Any advice would be appreciated.

  2. Cross-posting here from your comment on my web site. I’ll be working on mine this week, so will get some pics and send them to you. Here’s a thought though – as far as I recall, the asymmetric Termi half-system that fits either the standard 749 or the R is 54mm (Ducati Store :: Ducati 749 / 999 :: Exhaust Systems :: TERMIGNONI STEEL ASYMETRICAL RACING EXHAUST FOR DUCATI 749, as is the full Termi for any 749/999 - part no: 96433703B for the deep sump and 96433603B for the shallow sump - there's a deep sump version on eBay - does yours look like this? NEW GENUINE DUCATI 749 999 TERMIGNONI CARBON EXHAUST SYSTEM 54MM 96433703B | eBay. The full 57mm Termi, which mine has, has the very distinctive banana-shaped pipes where they rise behind the engine. That system, BTW, is only recommended for the R, as apparently it does awful things to the mid-range on a non-R, so I’d be slightly surprised for such a system to have come off a non-R 749. I wonder if you have either a set of standard headers with the 54mm half system attached or a shallow sump version? 3. Thanks for your comprehensive reply. Apparently it came off a 2005 deep sump, black swingarm 749, so I assumed it would fit my bike. Hopefully a picture is attached. Unfortunately Termignoni don't seem to stamp part nos on their exhausts making it more difficult to identify.
I've not given up on trying to make it fit, but it's not looking likely.

  4. A base 749 or 749S does not have a deep sump, only the 749R does.

  5. That looks like a full system as it has the banana pipe.
    It should fit a 749R.

  6. Yes it is and I thought so too. The problem seems to be with the "spaghetti" part as it exits where the sump is.
I'm hoping that I've made a mistake and it will fit!

  7. They are VERY tight to fit...the angles are critical when fitting it together...you need about three pairs of hands to hold it/twist it to get it all aligned.

  8. I had no problems fitting my 57mm system and I did it alone the last time around. It took more time to tighten the flange nuts than to fit the pipes themselves. A bit of lubricant on the joints helps a lot.

The exhaust on the topic is most likely for a shallow sump if it came off a base/S 749 - it won't fit the deep-sump R.

  9. Thing is, the seller says it came off a deep sump bike. It would be helpful to be able to see pictures of the 2 systems side by side to see what the differences are. I have a Ducati brochure listing the aftermarket exhausts but the photos are generic and identical.
It would be even more helpful if Termignoni would stamp the model number on it and then I perhaps wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

  10. Does the seller have a pic of the bike? I saw the ad for the exhaust on eBay and everything indicates it's off a base or S model 749 which means it's for shallow sump.

  11. No. Initially he said he had some photos that he would send but on further inspection thought they would be of no use. Just wondering if it could be altered to make it fit. He, of course is adamant it should fit.
Seems that everything I buy for the Ducati is not as it seems! Including the bike itself, which apparently has been breathed on by an Italian race team who fitted 100mm pistons making it an 848.They said it originally had a 57mm system fitted and was exceeding 140 bhp at the wheel.

  12. Sorry about the delay - here then some pics of the fit below my engine - hope they help! (I was going to wheel it out of the stable & get better pics but it's currently pissing down! 13. Where's the problem?

  14. There isn't one: the pics are of mine, which is fitted just fine, to show the OP what the full 57mm system should look like.

  16. Forgive me for riding my motorcycle… …and there can't be that many 749Rs that live a mile off-road…

  17. Thanks for that. Very helpful. I managed to find some photos online of the 57mm system and it is different.
I'm convinced that mine is for a shallow sump model.l have fitted it as far as possible but as you can see, the sump is in the way.
Otherwise it would seem quite straight forward. image.jpeg image.jpeg

  18. Ps here is a picture of the 54mm system I have and also one of a 57mm system.

  19. From the various pics, it does look like yours isn't anywhere near missing the sump - and there's not that much leeway on the rear section to allow it to meet the header. There does seem to be some debate about whether the 05/06 non-R bikes went to a deep sump - I've seen pics that appear to show both sumps with the black swingarm.

  20. As discussed on multiple threads earlier:

749 base model, all years - shallow sump
749S, all years - shallow sump
749R, all years - deep sump
    999 base model 2003-2004 - shallow sump
    999 base model 2005-2006 - deep sump
999S, all years - deep sump
999R, all years - deep sump
