749 749 Comfort

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by 6GR, Jul 13, 2016.

  1. reading the other post of the guy not comfortable / happy with his Panni,,, just got wondering how other 749 owners rate the comfort / user friendly suitability of their bikes ( eg. driveability / filtering / traffic / m25 etc )

  2. Depends how tall, short, skinny, fat, limber, stiff... Everyone always bemoans 748 ergo's but I found mine a lovely ride for longer journeys. My 749 can either feel like a fitted glove or an abomination of nature, depending on how I'm feeling that day and what kind of a ride I'm having. I think that if you're looking to a hardcore sportsbike to fulfil daily duties including commuting then you have to concede that you're going to be hunched over and putting a lot of weight on your wrists and will be stiff if you're that kind of a person.

So a combination of your own physicality, your use case and how you're feeling that day... that is your answer. :D

(Edit: as an everyday bike I'd probably rate my Scrambler more highly but from a durability point of view, not so much. If I was doing motorway commute then I'd probably go hunting for something like a 650 Versys Yamaha Tracer, if a new bike, or something like an old Tenere or Africa Twin if I wanted something bargain basement. I wouldn't hesitate to get into a UJM for that purpose.)

  3. out of my GSXR SRAD, 996 and 999, the 999 is by far the comfiest and the one I would commute on. With the worst mirrors.

  4. Never been a problem during a 20 min session around Donington GP circuit.

  5. Use my 999 for touring and 2up a lot.
Traffic/town in hot weather a pain otherwise really comfortable.
Done a couple of 2x600 mile days on it(solo) no problem.

  6. My only problem with my 999 is my neck, my wrists are just fine. If I'm travelling at a reasonable lick, the windflow supports my head but when I slow down, my neck does start to hurt - need to ride more and toughen up!

I've cured the mirror problem by fitting the smaller version of the Oberon Streetfighter bar-end mirror on the right-side. Fills in the blind spot perfectly and is small, neat and discreet, so doesn't spoil the looks :)

  7. I'm a married man, I'm used to getting it in the neck.

Fitted 2x cheap Oberon copies today and am going to tape over OEM mirrors and take a few test rides. I want to take them off so testing first.

  8. Comfort on a 749 you must be joking. Cooks your nuts in traffic strains your wrists & arms, wrecks your spine around town, but that isn't why we ride them it's more than that.

  9. I put slightly higher clipons on mine. 6' x 15st x 63yrs and recon on riding it for a few more years.

  10. I installed a speedymoto top triple, it allows any lift up to 20mm and a reasonable change of forward/backword swing of the original clip-ones,
I removed all the pins that locate the control/levers etc and set up for my angles, do the same for your feet and play with rearset adjustment and peg position,
I spent a week getting it perfect,
See Dave Moss 2 clicks out on YouTube and search his ergo setting advise
Best mod I have done besides suspension setup
Its now a dream and well worth the fiddling around with simple changes

  11. At 6'2" and 17st, I have no right to feel comfortable on my 749s, but having just come back from a quick 1000 mile blast round Holland and home again, i found it really comfy. I do have a 'short legs, long torso' shaped body which helped a lot! Only in slow traffic is it a pain, when the heat build up becomes almost unbearable in leathers!

  12. thanks to those who shared their own experiences,, personally i find mine very comfortable and always driveable..:)

  13. Me too :/
The oem are better placed for glancing at, so I'd recommend keeping them. Bar ends are a long way from line of sight, so better for filling in the full field of vision behind imho

  14. I get on ok with std mirrors. Have to do funky chicken and 2 up is pain to see directly behind but with lenses set up right i can see anything on approach either side.

  15. mmm, i have no mirrors as one broke when it fell over ( just against the wall but bad enough to crack the screw mounting ) on first attempt to get it onto paddock stand while it was in the living room before i even got to ride it !! took the other one off for sake of aesthetis,,, bit of a pain , new one 120 £ and never s / h one comes along ( tried super glue,, tried araldite )
