My stand is flopping about like a naked bingo wing in a storm. Is there any way to tighten it without removing the fairing? Dealer says bring it in and they'll do it. I'm a complete tool with tools (and don't have any), I'm just not prepared toolage wise to do anything other than remove the pillion seat.
If it's the same as the 899 it has zero adjustment,it's a bit over engineered , the only reason it will flop about is if somthing is broken rather than loose, the bottom pin that holds the spring may have come out as its screwed in from the rear.
The bolt is only a pivot, the spring tensions the stand and is not connected to the bolt in any way ,there is a spring clip on the end of the bolt to stop it working loose, a picture speaks a thousand words
I had a similar issue on my 848 after a recent dealer service, it was very 'free' and a little too easy to spring back when moving the bike in the garage. All they had done was clean it. It's gunked up and gone back to its normal stiffer state now. If yours is flopping in the direction perpendicular to its usual motion I'd say something was definitely wrong.
could be that shouldered pivot bolt has come loose as the action of putting stand down/up can do this if not locked up correctly.
Nah its the actual bolt that secures the stand. I noticed that the paint mark didn't match up and moved the bolt with a finger. Theres a clip on the end of there stopping it coming all the way off. What made me check was a like flopping noise down there.
Did you get this sorted in the end MergatroidSkittle? I remembered this thread when I returned home from a ride last night and my side-stand appeared to be allowing the bike to rest at a much steeper angle. On closer inspection I could see that a bolt was actually missing, I'm guessing the same one as you mentioned needing tightening up? It had obviously fallen out during my ride home It was a complete ball-ache trying to open the garage and get it on a paddock stand, all the while holding the bloody bike upright as I didn't trust it on the stand. I have the R&G bobbins fitted to the back wheel as well so I had to remove those too before getting the paddock stand in! Nightmare. Anyway, quick call to Moto Rapido and my £1.90 bolt is on its way! But to answer your original question, I had to remove the lower fairing to get to this. It only takes a couple of allen keys and 5 minutes of your time. Me thinks a bit of loctite is in order for the new one!
I think the particular nut that has come undone on mine just bolts straight in, don't think there's a circlip on that part? I hope not as I've not ordered one!
The front bolt has a circlip on the back,to stop the rear nut coming off, yours must have been missing or it's not up to the job and came off as the bolt worked loose, you can see the circlip in the photos I posted at the start of the thread,I found it easier to remove the complete side stand to put it back together and get the circlip back in.
The dealer sorted it. They checked it over. I had tightened quite hard with my thumb through the fairing, said it was alright at first lol. Basically I first noticed that the paint marks weren't lined up. Then I noticed I could move the bolt (one with the circlip at the other end) with my thumb. Flopping noise might of been in my head because it was just the aforementioned bolt that was loose.
A bit of a bump here....... noticed at the weekend the side stand was fairly loose.....yup,proper ! :fearscream: Been tinkering about with it all week. The actual pic that Simmytt posted shows large hex bolt and round retainer in with c clip. This is what the stand actually pivots on. My pivot bolt/pin wont go in all the way. Now Ive got it tight enough without threading it...still not sitting flush behind fairing. On top of this the stand is retracting too far when up - all the way and actually rubbing under the swingarm :grimacing: Anyone any ideas on how to set tight right. It was fine up until now really odd....if I could get it not to hit the swinger id be happy enough.... :Banghead:
I've had to tighten my pivot bolt twice in 1600 miles now and I've lost 3 fairing bolts up to now... Not the best
I've lost the big hex bolt a couple of times, damn thing seems prone to vibrating ou I've never needed to look at the pivot bolt so not sure of the setup but have you checked the big hex bolt is holding the stand on properly. I lost a couple of those big bolts before getting around to locktighting it properly.
Yeah, have it sorted. Took lower panel iff. Then the two bolts ( side stand a frame yoke ) that hold side stand on. The actual pivot bolt that the stand swings on was v loose. Wasnt sitting right. Tweeked it up and solid now.... Apparently with the c-clip on the back of pivot bolt wont let the bolt come off completely if the thing is hamging off.. But worth keepin an eye on
